He picked up the necklace, thumb running over the familiar curves and overall smoothness of the object in hand. The pendant was nothing stunning in itself; a black sphere overlapped by a vibrant blue and balanced by half, soft yellow crescents on each side. The design was uncomplicated, but he felt as if there was some deeper significance to it that he desperately needed to unearth.
Equivalent to N.
With his simplistic semblance and acquired eloquence, he could easily fool any typical, ignorant person. And to be frank, he kept Black fooled until the very end.
But it was from him that Black had learned never to take things at face value. In the most painful way possible, that is.
"I'll come back."
It was three years ago that the phrase was whispered into his ear, filling his entire being with hope. And at the same time, the item he held now was placed into his possession.
So he choked back the tears and controlled his overwhelming urge to speak any of the words he wished to say before turning away from the man, fingers curled into a fist around the memento and body visibly trembling. He couldn't bring himself to see him depart.
Black believed it then. In fact, he still believes it now. Clinging onto the last shred of hope keeps him from screaming out in agony at what he could— No, should have done before he left, how he shouldn't have believed him, how empty such promises can be.
I really had the urge to write something sort of angsty with Black and N.
