"The first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want." – Ben Stein

Jane gets rid of the wedding ring. It's not a decision, it's more like an instinctive movement. He pretends to be good at this thing called life. He pretends to forget. It's easy, at first, but he comes to realize that forgetting isn't right. People don't get to 'just forget' in this world, this pathetic excuse for a world.

Jane doesn't forget the pain, he hides it, behind a smile. He shields his true emotions with a grin, because that's easy, even when it's not. He tricks himself on a daily basis into believing that he can just move on, just live his life. What that truly means isn't important anymore. Life's a cruel joke and that's the new philosophy he subconsciously wants to hold high. It's the new him.

The truth is that he still sees his wife every day, but no one is allowed to know that. He secretly doesn't want to forget. He can still hear her voice, telling him how obnoxious he really is, telling him that she loves him with all her heart.

Jane doesn't get rid of the wedding ring, he keeps it. Het puts it back where it belongs, his left ring finger.
