Belated Valentine
"Hotch?" Emily walked into his office, "The files you wanted?"
"Yes, thank you. Just leave them here."
He watched her place the files on the left corner of his desk, contemplating whether or not to say something. His feelings, though not quite sure what they were, had developed a great deal in the last few months.
When his eyes met hers she smiled at him slightly and turned to walk out but Hotch quickly walked to the other side of his desk and called after her.
"Uh, Emily… I'm sorry it was late."
"late?" Emily turned around, surprised at the eagerness in his voice.
"The card I left on your desk this morning... It was late. I'm sorry I couldn't have gotten it to you earlier. We had a case. And well the date just kind of slipped past me..." He trailed off, unsure of his words, beginning to think he was rambling.
When Emily could make sense of what he was talking about, her eyes widened and her mind was suddenly lost in thought.
To be sure, Emily was surprised when she had found the Valentine's Day card on her desk that morning. Maybe a small part of that was because the occasion had been a day ago, but mainly because she, Emily Prentiss, hadn't gotten a Valentine since high school. She remembered opening the card with so much excitement she almost ripped the envelope. The card had read "Happy Belated Valentine's Day." True, she felt the slightest bit of disappointment when she saw it hadn't been signed, but it had lifted her spirits the entire day and she had finished her paperwork earlier than usual.
But now, to find that it was her boss that had left it there; it was completely unpredictable. And yet she had never wanted it to be anyone else.
Hotch, who was now leaning on his desk, suddenly feared that he had been out of line. He realised then, when he saw the expression on Emily's face, that it had been completely inappropriate to give his subordinate a Valentine's Day card. He was about to apologise when the edges of her mouth quirked up. He returned her gesture. She was smiling. That was a good thing.
Hotch stopped breathing when Emily suddenly closed the space between them and leaned forward to give his cheek a tender kiss.
She whispered in his ear, "Thank you, Hotch" and smiled at him one last time before leaving his office.
Thanks for reading! I'm trying to sneak in a kiss in my stories but I'm finding it a bit hard to make it seem realistic. Also, I wasn't too sure about the ending in this one, so tell me what you think! It's much appreciated :) Anyway, as I said in my other story I am still working on a longer VDay-fic! so I hope you enjoyed this one and i hope to make up for the shortness of my stories soon :)
