Prodigal

"Looks like it's up to you. Guess we're out."

Fai had said this to Syaoran right after he had forfeited the match with Kurogane. He saw no need to continue it, nor did he decide to. He pretty much knew for the beginning that it was not he who should get the feather for Sakura.

"You knew…didn't you Fai?" Syaoran replied.

Fai could only smile. That was what he did, after all. He smiled when there were no words to be said, and he smiled when there were gaps to be filled. He was happy that Syaoran was able to figure it out for himself. Not that he had assumed otherwise. Syaoran was a smart boy. A smart boy with a lot on his plate right now.

He didn't want to make anything harder for him, but he did want him to realize all that he could do.

He wanted him to realize that if he could win this fight, if he could win any of the fights that he would have to fight in the future, he could win any fight.

Fai also wanted Syaoran to realize that he was not alone, though. He knew that one's own reserve of strength could only go so far – he definitely knew that much. He wanted Syaoran to know this.

If he wanted help, if he needed help, all he had to do was ask. That was what the rest of his friends were for. Real things, things that truly mattered in the end, took time – it was a process. And he was going to need all the help he could get.

And Fai was more than happy to oblige.
