After Finn left to go pick up dinner, Kurt settled onto the couch and closed his eyes, allowing a sense of relief to wash over him. He was so glad his dad was going to be alright. After the recent stressful events, all he wanted was to have a relaxing, calm day at home with no one bothering him.
But soon there was a knock at the door. Kurt reluctantly got up to answer it. To his surprise, he opened the door to find Mr. Schuester standing on his doorstep.
"Kurt, I'm glad to hear your father's surgery went well," said Will.
"Thank you," said Kurt.
Before Kurt could say another word, Will stood aside, and Marley, Ryder, Jake, Blaine, and Sam trooped into his house.
"What-"
Kurt didn't even have a chance to finish his sentence before the Glee club suddenly burst into a rendition of "Come What May."
None of them, least of all Blaine, noticed the look of rising horror on Kurt's face. Blaine stepped forward from the group and dropped to one knee. Kurt gasped in shock, but Blaine took it as a sign of happy surprise as he pulled out a small box and opened it to reveal a ring.
When Blaine opened his mouth, the Glee club immediately stopped singing, knowing it was now Blaine's time to shine.
"Kurt, I know we said we'd save this song for our wedding, but I thought it was appropriate now, to remind you that we're meant to be, no matter what," said Blaine. "Kurt…will you marry me?"
"Blaine…I…don't know what to say…"
"We're soul mates!" said Blaine. "So what could possibly say other than yes?"
"Blaine- this is crazy- we're not even dating- I'm with someone else now-"
"Kurt! I'm not going to let you minimize what we have together!"
Kurt felt the anger rising in him. This was too much, and he didn't need this today. "You're the one who minimized what we had together when you cheated on me!"
Suddenly, Sam stepped forward, putting himself between Blaine and Kurt. "Kurt, you have to say yes!"
Kurt looked confused. "What business is it of yours?"
"I'm just helping my bro- that's what I always do."
"Since when?" asked Kurt.
"He's my best friend, why wouldn't I help him?" said Sam. "Don't you know what you have in Blaine? He's so kind and caring!"
"How- what are you-"
"You must know how he is," said Sam. "When I was down about myself, he noticed, and he contacted my friends and made a video of people telling me how awesome I am. When he thought I needed money, he was there for me, trying to help me. Anyone would be lucky to have someone like him!"
"He- he never did anything like that for me," said Kurt. "And…and I didn't even know you guys were best friends!"
A look of realization slowly appeared on Blaine's face as he finally got up from his kneeling position. "I guess- I guess I never really talk about my life to you, do I, Kurt?"
Kurt looked down, silent. It was enough of an answer.
You're the only one who really knew me at all
The words of the song echoed in Blaine's mind. The words were true. He was more open and honest with Sam than he'd ever been with Kurt. Even when he'd been hiding his feelings from Sam out of fear, he'd never pulled away from him, never stopped being there for him, like he did with Kurt when he was upset. And when he'd sung that song to Sam, he'd lied and said that it was about Kurt, because he hadn't wanted to admit-
Blaine suddenly realized that he was doing the same thing now. He wanted to pretend that this was about Kurt, that Kurt was the one he loved, the one who inspired him to be kind and selfless, to put someone else's needs before his own. But he'd never been selfless with Kurt. Even now, he was being selfish with Kurt, just using him to try to make himself feel better, when Kurt was in such a vulnerable position after everything that had been going on with his dad. And he hadn't even thought to care about that- with Kurt, he never had.
Blaine put his hands over his face to hide his tears. "I'm sorry, Kurt. I'm sorry."
And Blaine ran out of Kurt's house.
