(write for) 15 minutes * male character - under 18 * a new day

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't explain this habit of his. Every morning (or, rather, every morning that he was able to drag himself out of bed) he would take a walk around the grounds and just sit and stare at the lake. Some days he would think about his classes to come, others he would wonder what he would do once he graduated. On days like this, however, he would just stare across the lake, admiring the reflection of the sunrise on the water's rippled surface, not thinking about anything in particular.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, savoring the fresh and crisp taste of the morning air. The morning was when he thrived, when he was able to just enjoy the day. There was no homework, no classes, no problems, no death, no war. All that mattered in the world was him and the nature around him.

This morning didn't seem remarkable. It was perhaps a bit chillier than any other day the previous week, but otherwise a perfectly normal day.

In reality, it wasn't a normal day. It was a fantastic day. It was the day he finally turned seventeen, the day when he would legally be able to emancipate himself. He would never again have to return home to his parents, he would never again cower under his father's harsh words or his mother's scolding looks. He was free.

Tilting his head to feel the full force of the morning sunshine on his face, he let out a small grin. He could have a new life, a new start. It was a new day.
