1 My Sister, My Friend
Author's Note: Takes place before the movie. This chapter is from Neil's POV

Ch. 1: Loss
I glanced sideways at Kate. She gave me a tentative smile. "I'll make you a deal, Captain Edwards." Both of us jumped and turned back to the man in front of us. He is the leader of the Seditionists, a group, rather large group, of people who, for one reason or another, decided not to fight the phantoms with the rest of humanity.
I had made a mistake on navigation and we ended up over Sedition territory. I mentally kicked myself for that. I had memorized enemy territories when I was fourteen. How could I have messed up?
"I will let you go," I almost cheered. "if one of you stays behind." My heart fell. I knew what he meant. If one of the girls stay behind. The sedition leader was notorious for using pretty female soldiers for his own pleasure. My hands balled into fists. Grey turned towards us.
"I'll be damned if Jane or Kate are left behind." I hissed. I really like Jane, and Kate's my little sister! I'd rather die then leave either of them in the hands of that sick bastard. Ryan and Grey agreed.
"Okay, so we all stay, and we'll work out an escape later, alright?" All of us nodded, but Kate remained eerily quiet.
"But-" she started.
"No buts." Grey cut in. "No one is being left behind. Our main directive is survival." Kate fell silent. Grey turned toward the man. "We have decided that-"
"You can take me." Kate stepped forward. Before anyone could react Sedition guards grabbed her and dragged her to the leaders side.
"Kate!" I ran forward, but Grey and Ryan grabbed my arms and pulled me back. Sharpshooters were all over the room, ready to kill anyone who makes even the slightest wrong move, but I didn't care. "Kate!" I struggled more, but Grey and Sarge had a tight grip on me.
"Very well. You may go. Guards, show the soldiers to their transport." That asshole said coolly. I was getting dragged to the door.
"Kate!"
"Take care of yourself, big brother."
"Kate!"
"I love you."
"KATE!" I screamed, nearly in tears. Her glittering eyes met mine, and then I was pulled around a corner. "Kateā¦" I stopped fighting, but I still had to be half dragged to our transport. I was dropped into the pilot's chair and my hands moved automatically to start it up. 'Hey, at least she'll be alive.' That only cheered me slightly. I forced myself conscious and lifted the transport off the ground. As the ship climbed I looked out the side window. Kate was standing in the large front window of the mansion. Her light blue eyes met mine and she smiled gently. Good-bye, Neil. Her body jerked forward and blood splattered across the glass. My eyes widened.
I screamed.
