She was tired when he called.
It was late, she wasn't in the mood and she was trying to fight off a cough that had been plaguing her for over a week.
"Is there a reason you always decide you want to talk at inconvenient times?"
Silence.
"I can call back later."
A sigh. "Don't bother. What do you want?"
More silence. "I'll call back later."
He was decisive.
Then there was the dial tone in her ear.
And for some reason, she felt alone.
--
It was her fault really; she pushed him away.
Then when she really did need him he wasn't there.
Ironic.
"Yes?" he had answered his phone.
Short. An indication he didn't want to talk.
She didn't bother saying anything.
She pulled the phone away from her ear and closed it.
She would talk to him later. That's what she told herself.
She lied.
--
It was him who had given in first.
She had been walking away from him.
Then he said it. Three words.
"I miss you."
She stopped and turned, letting her gaze linger on him for longer than strictly necessary.
But she didn't say anything.
Not because she didn't want to, but because she wanted to savor the moment.
He missed her.
He actually cared.
He really did want her around.
She had walked back to him, trying to read his face.
Somehow he had it carefully composed into a mask. A mask over his feelings.
Maybe she had taught him that.
--
But she knew better than anyone that mask was only good for so long.
One day they would crack; reveal everything to everyone.
And hers was cracking.
She had put her hand on his cheek, looking into his eyes.
"You miss me?"
Incredulity.
He put his hand over hers. "I miss you."
Confirmation.
She allowed the sides of her mouth turn up slightly.
Enough to show that the feeing was mutual.
But she didn't say anything.
Because for now, that was enough.
A/N: So which pairing do you think it worked best for? Review and tell me.
And tell me what you thought. Good? Bad?
Happy Holidays.
