As the last of Voldemort's ashen remains floated away on the light breeze flowing through the courtyard in from of the entrance to Hogwarts, Harry's wand fell from his now limp fingers and clattered to the stone floor with an echoing rattle.
After all that he had been working for over the past 7 years, all the drama, angst and near death experiences, it was all over, with one simple spell. Harry breathed a sigh of relief and looked up at the crowds of people scattered around the courtyard. They had all ceased their fighting and quieted their shouting as the final duel between good and bad had reached its climax.
Now, however, the Death Eaters, with their dark robes and dirtied faces, were slipping away into the shadows. The Order of the Phoenix and the remaining school children were standing proud and tall as the light side prevailed once and for all.
None of this registered with Harry though. To them he was a hero, the Boy-Who-Lived, the Chosen One. But to one face amongst those gathered there, he was much more. To that one person, he was just Harry. With this in mind, Harry scanned the faces of the crowds searching for the one person he needed to see.
The platinum hair, even when dirtied with mud and grime, stood out like a sore thumb in the midst of all the chaos and destruction that surrounded them. Emerald green and molten silver eyes locked and one platinum blonde brow quirked slightly upwards. To others it would seem to be just an ordinary facial expression, but Harry knew what that look said.
'Are you okay?'
Who else was going to ask that of Harry before congratulating him? Who else truly cared how this was affecting him? No one. Sure, Ron and Hermione would think of it soon, but they were too wrapped up in each other with the shock and relief of their newfound love.
That one raised eyebrow assured Harry of something and put any doubts out of his mind. With a minute nod of his head, Harry started forward in the direction of the pale blond.
Understanding the meaning of the small incline of Harry's head, Draco started to weave his way through the groups of people around the courtyard until he was in open space.
When they were within 50 metres of each other, they both picked up their pace until they were practically running. With only mere inches in between them, they both paused, waiting to see the other's reaction.
After only a seconds hesitation, Harry threw his arms around Draco's neck, pulled him towards him and planted his lips on the other mans.
Draco was safe. They were both safe and that was all that mattered in those few moments.
