'This is stupid.' Sirius flopped backwards onto James' bed.
'I don't care if you think it's stupid, Sirius. It's not about you.' James glared at Sirius. 'It's for her, so you better start being helpful, or we're going to be here for a long time.' Sirius sighed and sat back up.
'Fine. Do your worst.' James took a deep breath and stood in front of Sirius.
'Lily, I need to ask you something.' Sirius batted his eyelids.
'Yes, Jamesy?'
'That is not what Lily sounds like- putting on a high voice doesn't make you a girl.' Sirius pouted.
'I thought it was pretty good, myself. Anyway, don't you want to get on with this?' James nodded.
'Right. Anyway, Lily I need to ask you something. And whatever you answer, is okay.' Sirius snorted.
'That's basically telling her to say no.' James rolled his eyes.
'Fine, I'll leave that bit out.' He got down on one knee. 'You're the most important person in the world to me. I'd even give up Quidditch if you wanted me to-'
'Really?'
'Shut up. You're not making this easy. So, yeah, I'd do anything for you. And I can't imagine my life without you-'
'Cheesy.'
'-So I was hoping that we could spend the rest of our lives together. What I'm trying to say is- Will you marry me?'
'Well,' came a dry voice from the doorway, 'I've always thought you'd be a cute couple.' James whipped his head around to see an amused looking Lily Evans leant against the door frame.
'Lily? I thought you were at Alice's!' Lily grinned.
'Evidently. I've been out for quite a while- perhaps you were too lost in Sirius to realise.' James looked genuinely worried.
'I wasn't proposing to Sirius- I'm straight, you know that!' Lily laughed.
'I do know that. But you were doing a very good impression of not being.' Sirius got up off the bed.
'Well, I'm late for- for- a Gobstones tournament! So I'll be off then. Bye!' He rushed past Lily, and a second later, they heard the door slam, followed by the crack of Apparition. Lily sat down on the bed, and James sat next to her.
'So... It looks like Sirius isn't going to give you an answer any time soon.' James laughed.
'I guess not.'
'I personally couldn't have said no to that proposal- although Sirius was right, little bit cheesy.' James grinned brightly at her.
'So, Lily... What would you have said then?' Lily smiled softly.
'I would tell you that I feel exactly the same about you, and that I'm shocked you would even consider giving up Quidditch,' James chuckled. 'I would then go on to say that of course I would marry you, James, and it's ridiculous that you would ever think I might say no.' Here, James grabbed her and hugged her so tightly that she couldn't breathe.
'James- James- can't- breathe-' He let go of her, his face alight with joy.
'Are you being serious? Really?' Lily grinned, her face mirroring his.
'I suppose I'll have to be Sirius, seeing as he was your first choice.' James stuck his tongue out at her. 'But really, yes, I will marry you, James Potter.' James jumped up.
'We have to go and tell everyone. I've been waiting for this since I was about twelve.' Lily laughed as he grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the front door.
