Title: Heaven's Tears
Pairing: Sirius/Remus
Rating: PG
Summary: "The sky's crying."
Dedication: ladylalaith, for her birthday.

It's raining again when Remus opens his eyes and realises that Sirius is not next to him. That's the way it was the first morning Sirius had been taken to Azkaban. That's the way it had been for the last thirteen years.

The sky's crying.

Tears for James, for Lily, for Harry - and for himself, he had thought back then.

But this time, the gentle pitter-patter is different - less sorrowful, less lonely - and his momentary surge of panic ripples away.

He finds Sirius sitting on the porch, soaked to the bone and staring out into the grey nothingness of the countryside where he lives. And he stops, leaning against the doorway, watching him.

The sky's crying.

Tears for Sirius and all those lost years.

Sirius is quieter now, more contemplative, more thoughtful than that brash youth that was ripped away from him. Shadows hide behind his gaze and smile, lurking in corners that Remus cannot shed light to. And sometimes, he loses Sirius momentarily to those shadows - and he's afraid that one day he'll lose him forever.

But there's a half smile on Sirius' face.

The sky's crying.

Tears of joy for Sirius' freedom.

It's a strange thing, a rare sight to see Sirius in a moment of such calm. The rain continues to fall, and Sirius continues to sit - and smile.

"You're going to get a cold," he whispers and Sirius' smile grows.

"That's okay. It will remind me that I'm alive."

And he realises that the years in Azkaban have given Sirius a child-like aura of innocence; appreciating the magic of rainfall simply because it falls, appreciating simply because it is.

And Remus finally sees the truth.

The sky's crying.

Simply because it does.
