Hawkes pulled off his gloves and threw them into the trash. He sighed as he rubbed his eyes. It has been a long night. With a major accident on the bridge, the bodies seemed to be piling up.

The dead may rest but the living can not.

He yawned softly and walked over to his desk and took a seat. He still needed to do some paperwork before he could head for bed.

"You know that the paperwork will be there in the morning," A familiar voice said.

He looked over to see Dr. Sid Hammerback with two cups of coffee.

"Then when I come back, there will be more," He said with the wave of his hand.

"True."

He watched the doc approached his desk and set the cup of coffee on its edge.

"But there is more to life than paperwork, Hawkes. Don't you have a house? Don't you have a hobby? Don't you have any friends?"

The same questions that he heard all of the time. Most of his coworkers asked him to go for drinks or to watch the game and he always politely declined. He preferred these four walls than the outside world. The outside world broke him…these four walls haven't.

"I have a house and I like to read."

"Wonderful," Dr. Hammerback said as he moved away from his desk and moved toward the body.

"Poor thing…I swear that this place has the best coffee in New York. Starbucks is too fancy for me. McDonalds is too bitter. This place mixed the right amount of bitterness and flavor," He said as he took a sip of his coffee.

Well, not the oddest conversation that he had with Dr. Hammerback. The one about threesome was…entirely too informative.

"Which leads to my question…how many cups of coffee have you had tonight?"

"Enough."

Dr. Hammerback chuckled.

"I will let you return to work. Oh, there is a wonderful opportunity opening up at the office."

"I am perfectly happy where I am."

"I am not telling you to run and apply for it. Just planting the seed. You are still young, Sheldon. Some people are made for this job. Some people aren't."

His comment made his chest ached.

"Are you saying that I am not good at my job?"

"Oh, you are excellent at this job. Probably one of the best I have seen a while. That isn't the point. My point being that I know when a person is enjoying their work…or when they are running away and afraid."

His body tensed up. He needed to end this conversation now. The look that the doc was giving him wasn't one that he wanted to see. He disliked pity…greatly. No, this one was worse…this one was of understanding.

"Thank for the coffee, Dr. Hammerback. I really need to finish this paperwork before I head home."

"The only thing is that I ask you to think about it. You will do well out there. You are quick on your feet and smart as a whip. And you are smart and spot little details. You will be good out there and don't underrate yourself."

He shifted in his seat. The unexpected praise caught him off guard. He sighed as he watched Dr. Hammerback leave. He had no idea what to think of his idea. He shook his head and went back to work.

When he left that night, those four walls somewhat lose their appeal.

End.

A/N: I was always curious on why Sheldon from being a medical examiner to the field. I know according to the Season 2 opener that he wanted to get out more. Sid being there? Well…Sid is awesome. That is all that I have to say. Read and Review if you wish.
