L stood, watching.

Just watching.

Waiting.

Nothing else.

Waiting for the inevitable. He watched Light's chest rise up and down, a little slower with each breath. It made him sad to see this. Because he allowed himself to believe, if only for a second, that perhaps Yagami Light and Kira were two different people, sharing the same body. So who died before him now? Light or Kira? Both? He looked again, getting the strangest feeling that the boy could see him…

It wouldn't be long now.

Unable to remain still any longer, he moved forward, gliding soundlessly up the metal steps, and putting himself into a resting position on the stairs. Not quite sitting, not quite hovering, a little above Light's eye level.

"You cannot see, or hear me?"

No response. He felt a pang in his stomach.

He made a strange sound, like the beginning of a note, a sound not quite like speaking, but it was cut short almost as soon as it left his lips. Why still so self-conscious? It wasn't like there was anyone to judge…

He began again, slow and trembling, his voice sounding hollow and empty in the empty building, with no other sound but the rapidly slowing heartbeat of the boy next to him.

"Through wind and rain

All storms must die

Through pain and sorrow

We stay alive

We will remain

'Til memory fades

And webs of shadow cross all minds

And through this dark

We rest and hide

We forever close our eyes

Our presence stays

Untouched by time

Until the last stream flows bone dry

Until the last tree withers and dies

And the stars fall upon the sky

And last regrets, they mean no more

As the last wave breaks upon the shore

And the last note hangs in the air

As the last thought releases the last care

And finally, when all else is gone

The last light will look very long

And memory is soon dismembered

Even when the darkness falls

To keep a dream once remembered

The last heartbeat. The closing of the eyes. How fitting.

A ghostly tear fell unattended upon the hand of Yagami Light.
