Here it is another one-shot I was unable to put to rest until written. While hanging out at the hospital again, this one ate at me, bugging me constantly so, here it is for your reading pleasure. Obligatory disclaimer- I do not own the Newsies, never have, most likely never will-hey, a girl can be a little optimistic.

Special thanks to Shortie for giving this a quick read-through complete with the go-ahead nod.

Shocked by the news the doctor delivered, Esther stood next to Sarah mouth wide-open, thoughts raging through her mind at record-breaking pace. Wanting to ask questions, but unsure where to start, her mouth continued to hang open as if out of her control. After a few seconds she regained composure closing her eyes, taking a deep breath and clearing her throat.

Not allowing her eyes to wander, for she was unable to look at her daughter, Esther stared eye to eye with Dr. Friedman. Tears stung as she fought against the thoughts of not being ready for this.

"Pregnant?"

"That's my conclusion, yes."

"Are you able to tell when the baby will be due?"

"By best guess, taking into consideration the missed menstrual cycles, the nausea and the uterine cramping, I'd say late May, early June."

Sarah left the office in total disbelief. The signs were all there, the fatigue, the moodiness, the sensitivity to smells, but brushed it off as just the flu. With a baby on the way, what choice would she have but to move? The apartment was barely big enough for the five of them. Thankfully, she started working at the corner bakery last month for it paid enough for her to manage a living.

It was not until they reached the halfway point that either of them spoke. Breaking the silence, Sarah felt it best to draw attention away from the baby.

"Davey wants to have a little party for Les' birthday."

In agreement, Esther nodded. "He has been working thoroughly on his lessons. I don't see why we couldn't have a few of his friends over for cake."

"Well, Davey has talked to Medda, you know how she feels about Les and she's offered to do a special show. She told us to invite everyone."

Esther was not overly fond of the children's friendship with the woman dubbed the Swedish Meadowlark, but Mayer found her charming so she kept her tongue. For her youngest son's birthday sitting through a show seemed the least she could do. He was her baby, baby, she almost forgot the reason for the walk. So, there would be another member of the family, she tried to tell herself the addition would not be a huge impact. They would cope, as they always did.

"Once the baby comes, the time you and Jack spend in the park is going to change. A lot of things are going to change."

"Mama, I know what having a baby around means; I was eight when Les was born. I remember the diapers, late night feedings, sweet little toes, cute smiles and soft chubby cheeks."

"Maybe your memory has slipped you of the rough times. Do you also remember the vomiting, ear infections, washing out the diapers, and walking the floor with a screaming infant?"

Thoughtfully Sarah replied, "It's easier to remember the good things."

Approaching their apartment building caused her heart to sink, knowing life would never be the same that the life she became accustomed to was going to face drastic change.

Seeing Jack sitting on the steps, Esther curtly greeted her daughter's boyfriend, threw open the door and hurried up the stairs.

Meeting her with a light kiss, concern painted on his face, Jack pulled Sarah to him.

"Jack, we just came from the doctor, Mama's a little upset."

"I noticed, are you okay?"

Nodding, Sarah took a deep breath before speaking.

"She's pregnant."
