"Madge wait!" Gale said running after her. "No!" Madge turned around furious. "You kissed her! You kissed her." Tears were forming in Madge's eyes. "I thought what we had was special; I thought that you loved me." She said the last part quietly, hoping Gale wouldn't hear her. "Madge," Gale stepped toward her, taking her face in his hands. His thumb wiped away tears that spilled over. "Look at me." Madge continued to keep her gaze towards the ground. "I'm sorry, I'm so incredibly sorry. I wish I could take it back but I can't. Katniss and I are friends. Just friends, that's all. I love you." Shocked at his words, Madge finally looked at him. She tried to memorize his eyes; Seam grey with specs of green and brown."If you're just friends, why did you kiss her?" Gale broke her gaze and looked toward the sky, dropping his hands. "I don't know! I just needed to know if she felt anything towards me. You can't go your whole life without knowing if what you felt in the past was made up or not. But that's the thing! The feelings I had towards her are in the past. We're just friends and that's all we'll ever be." Hesitantly Madge asked, "Did you want there to be something there between you two?" Gale took a step back and turned away from her. "I don't know." More tears spilled from Madge's eyes. "How about you tell me when you know." Tired and heartbroken Madge turned and ran back into her house.
Madge replayed this conversation over and over in her head as she trudged through the snow, clutching the Morphling in her hands. Katniss and I are friends. Just friends, that's all. Arriving at the Everdeen house, she thought over that sentence. Just friends. She pounds on the door desperately but no one answers. Eventually, three people appear; Haymitch, Mrs. Everdeen, and Katniss. They watch Madge carefully. "Use these for your friend," She croaks. She lifts the lid of the box to show them what's inside. "They're my mothers. She said I could take them. Use them. Please." Embarrassed of her explanation as to why she standing outside the Everdeen household, Madge runs back out into the storm. Just friends, that's all. I love you. Madge hoped Gale would live so that she could tell him she loved him too.
