Nightmares

She still had nightmares about that time.
Those weeks so many years ago, when she could not control her anger, when light had no distinction from dark, when she could not restrain herself from hurting her friends, her family, the ones she held dearest.
She would wake with a start in the dead of the night, with not but the moonlight for company. The sounds of screaming victims, the smell of blood on her hands, the feeling of bones breaking under her fist, spirits under her hateful words. She had accepted that that time was out of her control, that those moments when all she could think about was doing as much harm to the person in front of her, were not her fault.
But still… still the dreams tormented her. Frequently at first, then less and less, until now they only came every so often, whispering horrors in her ears while she lay sleeping, unsuspecting. When she finally woke from these dreams she could do nothing but sob. She's sit on the edge of the futon mattress with her elbows resting on her knees, face buried in her small hands as salty shame and fear leaked down her face.
Hiei witnessed these episodes every time they occurred, staying just outside the window to their room on the lowest limb of the sycamore that grew along the south wall of the temple. He knew better than to intrude on these moments of remorse. He, more than anyone maybe, could understand that one with past travesties such as theirs needed personal moments, moments alone when all they were expected to do was grieve and regret.
Hiei sat in the chilly night air tonight, one of those nights, and simply watched as his mate sat at the foot of the bed, her small body shivering with breathy sobs. His red eyes were dull with empathy for his love as she suffered threw what only she could understand. He longed to comfort her, to tell her it would be alright.
But she knew that. Already the dreams were coming less and less, the intensity dwindling. She would be alright someday. But not tonight, and not with his help. And so he sat and he watched as her tears slowly dried and she crawled back onto the bed and pulled the covers nearly completely over her face. And as usual she uttered the only words she could find to repent for her past deeds.
"I'm so sorry."
