Scary Numbers

Summary: On the care and feeding of Sunnydaleian vampires
Rated: T
Let's assume, Sunnydale is inhabited by 50000 humans. Let's
further assume, a Sunnydaleian vampire eats one victim a week, or 50
victims a year.
So an army of 1000 vampires would drain Sunnydale
in a year.
You might be able to replace 25 percent of the
population a year by fresh immigrants, feeding 250 vampires. But I think
this would only work for an army in a war zone.
I wouldn't count
on replacing more than 10 percent of a population a year, and keep a
working society; feeding 100 vampires. This would tie in with loosing
half of a class within three years, teenagers being considered prime
meat.
That means, it is in the Mayors best interest, to keep the numbers of vampires in town well below 100. It is also in the interest of every resident master vampire in Sunnydale, to keep the competition for food down.
So how many vampires can a town like Sunnydale support on its own?
If we assume an extra child as vampire food per mother, we need
1250 mothers to feed a vampire for 25 years (a generation).
Add
2.3 children and a father, we have a population of 6625 people. Add
another 50 percent so they can reach 75 years instead of 50, and we
have about 10000 people.
So a population of 50000 can feed 5
vampires on their own.
If we want more than five vampires, we
need vampires, that feed exclusively on pensioners; we could support
an extra ten of them
That means Sunnydale can support between 5 and 100 vampires.
If we still want more vampires, these will have to feed from animal blood, preferable pig, cow or sheep, after these animals have been butchered. Or the vampires may not kill the humans they feed from.
