Shikamaru had a whim one day. He wanted to plait Neji's and Ino's hair together so that he could look at and admire the contrast of black glossy hair twining with silky platinum blond hair strands.
The thought had popped up from nothing or perhaps he should not insult Naruto and Sasuke by calling them nothing. After all, it was they who created said whim in him.
He had been lying on a grassy ground and staring at the clouds one day when his peripheral vision spotted the pair resting at the base of a tree some distance away from him. They were leaning against each other, back to back and the meager amount of sunlight that shone through the leaves reflected off their heads, bringing the striking contrast of their vastly different-coloured hair out against the dim background of the shade.
Now, Shikamaru was not really an art person and if he ever liked art, it would be the beauty of shougi strategies and only that. Well, he also appreciated a piece of barbeque pork or two because the barbeque place his team often visited, ordered only the best quality pork, which when cooked was pretty succulent but it was too troublesome to take them from Chouji and he was not that interested in food…
However, despite his pathetically minuscule-amount of interest in the arts, he could not help but be attracted to the image the pair had presented (or at least their hair and the lighting did). He had stared until both of them stirred awake and when they left, something had gnawed his insides and demanded him to do something to smooth their longing. It was one of those illogical things in the world that were ever so troublesome.
His logical side told him that the effect of the image would be enhanced if longer hair substituted and were brought closer together in an intricate pattern, perhaps like the plaited cinnamon bread that Chouji sometimes ate. Of course his mind always informed him of the best options and within a short span of time, it deduced Neji's and Ino's hair to be used and plaited for the best effect.
His logic told him that he was being illogical for having such a whim and he was dully reminded of the saying that geniuses were usually dubbed as insane. His mind stated that the saying originated from one of the public's ways of categorizing people who were different from the masses but he did not try to disillusion himself by saying that the conclusion derived from both sides of the view was different.
Shikamaru groaned and pressed a palm to his forehead. The thoughts were too troublesome (depressing) and his whim was especially so as it had instigated his thoughts. It would be even more troublesome to act on his whim thus in the end, Shikamaru lay down once again to stare at the slow moving clouds, dulling his mind and leaving another of his whims unfulfilled.

Author's note: Well, I was trying to express how it could be distressing for Shikamaru to be a genius with one of the reasons being that geniuses have their strange whims. In retrospect, liking contrasting colours is not that strange. I like them and many people like them. In fact, it is they who inspired me to write but pointing this out would not fit the theme of this fan fiction so Shikamaru did not realize that.
