Merlin stands there, darkness encompasses the room even as day breaks. His eyes seem to glow a blood red as he watches closely, a thin, chilling smile creeps onto his face. He motions to Morgana to come closer, flexing the fingers of his right hand as he does so. Her mind and heart tell her she mustn't but her body moves without her, pulling her closer to him. He begins to murmur something, lifting up his arm slowly, his fingers are not quite out-stretched and something about the way he moves commands fear and awe. Lightening jumps from Merlin's fingers to Morgana's body, the sudden shock brings her to her knees and she screams at the pain…
"My Lady!" Gwen called running to Morgana's bedside, "My Lady what's wrong?" Morgana sat bolt upright, a look of fear on her face,
"G-gwen?" she asked shakily looking to the handmaid. Gwen smiled reassuringly, "Oh, Gwen…" she began to sob, "…it was horrible…" she said between sobs, "…I was so scared… and the pain…" Gwen put her arms around Morgana,
"It's okay." she told her soothingly but Morgana shook her head,
"It's not okay Gwen."

Gaius sat studying the plant carefully, sketching its leaves and labelling what he saw. There was a hesitant knock at the door and the court physician craned his neck to see who was at the door as it creaked open slightly. Morgana's head slowly emerged from behind the door, her body following shortly after. She looked shaken and dark rings under her eyes betrayed her weariness,
"Morgana," Gaius said, an undertone of worry in his voice, "what ever is the matter?" Morgana began to walk slowly over to Gaius, who got up and helped her along, sitting her down on one of the chairs,
"I had a dream last night Gaius…" she murmured as he lifted his hand from her shoulder,
"A dream?" the physician asked, "What kind of dream?" Morgana clasped her hands together nervously,
"It was more of a nightmare actually… about Merlin." Gaius's eyes widened,
"About Merlin?" he questioned, stunned by the statement,
"Yes…" she replied quietly, "It was terrifying…" she bit her lip as she fought to hold back tears of fear and confusion. Gaius looked at her knowingly,
"Tell me more about this dream."

"Merlin!" Arthur's crisp call sliced through the air and the manservant peered round the door, "Merlin, hurry up with that dinner." he said irritably, "You've had long enough." The prince rapped his fingers on the table impatiently,
"Coming Sire." Merlin replied stumbling into the room with a large platter filled with warm meats and salads,
"Did I hear sarcasm in your voice Merlin?" the manservant raised an eyebrow,
"Me? Sarcastic?" he asked, "Surely you must be jesting." Arthur rolled his eyes and motioned for Merlin to bring his food over,
"Hurry up. I'm starving." he said watching Merlin walk over to him. Just as he was about to set the platter down, a sharp headache pierced Merlin's head and he dropped it. Meats and salad flew into Arthur's face and covered his clothes. He plucked a piece of lettuce from his eyes and glared at the manservant as he got up from the floor,
"What do you think you're playing at Merlin?" he snapped brushing the food from his garments. Merlin did not reply but instead stared blankly at Arthur, "I asked you a question Merlin. I expect you to answer it." he told Merlin firmly. Still no reply. "Merlin!" he barked again, more tetchily this time. This time Merlin made an effort to reply,
"You do not own me." he answered, walking from the room. Arthur shouted after him but he paid no attention. He strode purposefully from the castle grounds and into the village, his eyes a cold, jet black.

Gaius sat down to create the potion, his ingredients laid out in chronological order so he didn't forget the order in which he needed to mix them. He took a handful of red-green leaves and placed them in a mortar and began to crush them with a pestle. It was at this point that the old wooden entrance door creaked an caused Gaius to spin around to see who was there,
"Arthur," he said in genuine surprise, "what on earth are you doing here?" The Prince walked slowly into the room,
"I don't suppose you've seen that blundering idiot Merlin have you?" he asked, his voice taking on an ill-tempered tone. Gaius shook his head as he went back to mixing his potion,
"No, not since he left this morning." he replied sprinkling the crushed leaves into a small bowl, "Why, what has the boy done this time?" Arthur let out a sigh,
"He dropped my dinner on me," he replied, "and then said 'You do not own me.' when I asked what he was playing at." Gaius gave Arthur a shocked look,
"Did you notice anything strange about the way he was acting - apart from what he said?"
"This is Merlin we're talking about Gaius." Arthur answered, "He's always acting strange." The old physician sighed walking over to Arthur,
"Where did he go?" he asked slowly. The Prince rolled his eyes,
"If I knew that I wouldn't be asking you." he responded, crossing his arms, "I suppose I could always ask the guards if they saw anything." Gaius nodded solemnly, remembering the dream Morgana had told him of. He had begun to worry, Morgana's dreams always had a way of coming true.

It was mid-afternoon and the village was a hive of activity. People lined the streets and hauled carts to and from the market. Merlin strode through the streets purposefully, his jet black eyes flitting from side to side as he surveyed his surroundings. Too many people, they would see if he were to use magic here. He pushed through the thronging streets receiving shouts and insults as he did so. Eventually he found what he was looking for, the perfect place. Unlike the rest of the village it was silent, no more than a few houses and dirt-tracks. There was no chance of an eye-witness. Merlin stretched his arm out in front of him with his palm facing a nearby house, his eyes glowed blood-red as he murmured an enchantment so quietly that he himself could barely hear it. Suddenly flames sprang from nowhere, licking hungrily at the corner of the house. He stood back and watched as the flames spread slowly engulfing the small building. Screams of terror sounded from inside and the corner of Merlin's mouth curled into a smile. He walked calmly from the scene. A job well done.

Arthur tapped his foot impatiently. How long did it take to find one person in a place like this? Merlin didn't exactly blend in with the crowd. The Prince was tempted to go out and look for the manservant himself but stopped as Merlin walked into the room,
"And where have you been?" Arthur asked in annoyance,
"I um… got a headache and I needed to um… get some water." The Prince crossed his arms,
"It takes you an hour to do that?" he asked incredulously,
"Y-yes…" Merlin replied, "I'm a little bit slow…"
"You're telling me." Arthur said, "And that's your explanation for you saying 'You do not own me' too I suppose." Merlin looked at the Prince, his eyebrows raised,
"Sorry?"
And there you have it. Chapter 1. Hope you liked and will be reading Chapter 2 when it is put up.
