DISCLAIMER: um.. i dont own harry potter at all (i wish i did :p)

I was sitting in the park, reflecting.

This was the park where I used to come almost every day during the summer. Severus had always been there.

He had always been there to tease me, to taunt me, to be my best friend. He had never grown up, and would never grow up. He would always be the same, taunting Slytherin, on the inside.

He would trip me, and I would fall on my knees, starting to get back up, but before I could fully recover, he would do it again.

That's what had happened this time.

Except this time, I didn't think I could get up again.

I heard someone call my name.

I looked up, and saw Severus.

"What do you want?" I said harshly.

"I want to apologize," Severus said.

"No need, you don't need to apologize to someone insignificant like me, I never even meant anything to you, right? It was all for the money and for the satisfaction of proving your friends wrong," I said. To anyone else, my eyes would have looked filled with anger and rage.

But Severus knew what was really there. Hurt. Hurt and pain and sadness, something he couldn't bear to see.

"Listen, Lily, I-" Severus started.

"You don't have to pretend anymore Severus. Your bet is over and you're ten-thousand dollars richer. I said that I loved you, and now it's over. That's what the bet was, wasn't it Severus? Get me to say I loved you, and automatically win ten grand?" I said. I knew that my words stung, but I didn't care. I kept going.

"That's all I was, right? Money and pride? I heard you say so, I heard you saying that you had won, I loved you, and that they owed you ten grand. Well, I hope your happy Severus. You won your new friends, now won't you let me be, or did your friends offer you the dark mark if you can get me to forgive you, me a little 'mudblood'!"

"No, Lily, they didn't," Severus said, pain clearly filling every word.

"I lo-" he managed to get out before I interrupted him.

"Don't even say it Severus, you know it won't do any good," I said.

"I love you Lily. I always have," he finished.

"I loved you to Severus, don't you see?"

"We-" He started.

"But you used me. You dealt one blow after another," I said. "Just like you used to, all those summers ago. You don't play fair Severus, you never have. And you never will."

"I don't think I can take another blow Severus, I can't endure another," I said.

"I won't-" He started.

"I fell for you too many times Severus," I said.

"But I got up."

I walked away, knowing that I was walking away from what could have been something wonderful.

I made a promise to myself that I would never love again. I just couldn't take being hurt one more time.

Severus was the only man I had ever truly loved. And the only man I ever would love.

But I did not go running back into his arms, like a school girl who had fought with her boyfriend.

I didn't even turn around.
