Just a short little Peter-centric drabble in response to Marionette. Because my heart is breaking for him just as much (if not more) than it is for Olivia. This is what I think is going through Peter's mind right now.
You don't know what to say. There's nothing you can say.
She's right.
You should have known.
You should have known.
But you didn't.
And now she's gone.
You don't watch her leave. You can't. You don't have the right to anymore. She doesn't want you anymore.
You wish that you were surprised. You wish that you had not known this would happen. You wish that things were different.
But they aren't. You were not surprised. You knew this would happen.
Why would she want to be with you anymore?
How could she want to be with you anymore?
She doesn't.
And you can't blame her.
You can't even blame her.
Because this is your fault. You were the one who didn't see the truth. You are the one that betrayed Olivia. You are the one that let her take everything.
You take Walter out to get a milkshake. Somehow, you manage to fake a smile. You have always been good at hiding your emotions. It wasn't difficult to hide how horrible you felt from Walter.
You take Walter home and lock yourself in your room. You want to run. You want to run and never look back. You want to go far away. Somwhere, anywhere. You can't stay. You have no reason to stay now.
She doesn't want to be with you.
There is nothing holding you here anymore.
...
But you can't go.
You can't find the will to stand up, much less open the door and run away.
You have to stay.
Because even if she doesn't want you anymore, you still belong with her.
You will always belong with her - even if she doesn't want that anymore.
So you will stay. Even though it will kill you, even though you will want to run and hide and damn yourself every second of every day – you will stay.
Because you have nowhere else to go.
You belong with her.
