Author's Note: This will be a multi-chapter story, the first chapter is the Doctor's thoughts. Trust me, the first chapter is relevant, even though it may not seem it now. Please read then review, bad or good.

Disclaimer: If I owned Doctor who I wouldn't live in Australia.

With Donna, her first reaction was that everything was alien. That is wasn't human, that it was too different.

With Martha, her first reaction was that everything was different. That, yes it was amazing, but it was different. It wasn't human. It was new.

With Rose, her first reaction was that everything was new. Everything was unexplored and unknown, everything was amazing.

With Donna, at the end of a trip, they'd talk. They'd talk about what happened, they'd talk about their lives.

With Martha, at the end of a trip, they'd sit. They'd just sit in the silence, thinking for themselves of what happened. No words.

With Rose, at the end of a trip, they'd eat. Chips, a different place every time. They'd sit together, laugh, joke, just for each other's company. That's all that mattered.

With Donna, it was always about saving others. It was great if they saved the world, but even better if they saved as many people possible.

With Martha, it was always about no-one dying. She didn't like the unnecessary deaths, she'd prefer no-one died.

With Rose, it was about saving the world. Lives had to be lost, so other lives could be saved. The world always came first.

With Donna, it was about staying as long as possible. About getting as much time as possible.

With Martha, it was about staying as long as she could bear. She didn't want to be second to a ghost, so she'd stay as long as she could stand that.

With Rose, it was about staying forever. It was about spending her whole life with the Doctor.

Maybe that was why Donna was good at reasoning with people. She got people out of situations easy, which was why the Doctor chose her.

Maybe that was why Martha was good at saving lives. She would help people without a second thought, good or bad, which was why the Doctor chose her.

Maybe that was why Rose was good at saving the world. In the end, it wasn't about the lives that were saved, it was about the populations, which was why the Doctor chose her.
