Another Sleepless Night

Another Sleepless Night.

He had been having a lot of those lately, since he came back…from home.

His true home.

No, he couldn't think that way anymore.

"This is home now."

He had told his little brother that they have to make this world their own, despite the fact that they were completely oblivious to its past and present, its people, and its way of life. They had to try their best, letting go of their scarred past, and welcome a future in an unknown dimension with open arms.

He had to be brave and give it a go, hadn't he? Now that he was with the most important person in his life, in flesh and blood, there was a lot less to worry about.

They just had to try.

However, there were just some things that were never easy to let go. In fact, he didn't even want to make 'letting go' an option. He just wanted to linger on the misery, the distress, the regret, and the hardest of all- the guilt. He'd rather forever stain his memory than to erase his footsteps from the past because he couldn't bear to forget every single trace that could lead him back to the reminiscing times.

But he had left the beloved behind.

Indeed he did.

He left her behind…

Again.

"What about Winry? You know she misses you too!" his little brother, Alphonse yelled out on that fateful day.

He stopped. He didn't see that coming.

It was at this moment of hesitation did he realize how much he did not want to be separated from her, after all these years of misfortune they both tasted, after her showing how much faith she had put into him by lugging his automail limbs around in the hope of running into him, after the all-too-sudden re-encounter and all-too-short welcoming. Before he could pull himself together for an answer, he saw all an image, a heart-breaking image, of Winry's tearful face. It wasn't the first time he had made her cry.

But this would certainly be the last.

He didn't have a choice, did he? He had to protect his own world. That was the smallest thing he could do to his beloved homeland, the land that had filled his golden eyes and flowing memories since he had his first taste of life. It was a decision between staying close to his loved ones, or forever being divided but with their safety ensured.

What a critical move.

He closed his eyes for a brief moment, trying to push away the bad sides of this crucial decision in his mind, and gathered words that floated around his head to make a rational sentence, without sounding sentimental- because if he did, he would not be able to pull himself away from this world to carry out what he had in mind to safeguard it; he would not be able to pull himself away from staying with her.

Even though it hurt.

"Tell her thanks. She always makes the best automail."

With that, he left her behind, for the last time.

Edward Elric lied perfectly still on his bed, gazing up at the ceiling with golden eyes filled with sorrow, pain, and tears that he fought back, as images of his past came flashing up in his mind, haunting the tranquility of another pleasant summer night.
