Post-Avengers 2-Romanoff: A New Start

Right after the Avengers' rescue of New York and Loki's departure, Steve Rogers catches ear of the conversation between Romanoff and Barton concerning her latest assignment for S.H.I.E.L.D. She gives Rogers a job lead with S.H.I.E.L.D. and advises him to contact Fury about a mission that she believes Rogers may want to know about. However, Fury may not be open to that idea.

ACT ONE, SCENE TWO

EXT. Late Friday afternoon, Central Park, New York City, 3:59 p.m. EST.

ROGERS

Natasha.

ROMANOFF

Hey Rogers. How about a drink?

ROGERS

(wryly)

Not sure that would help.

ROMANOFF

Trust me, you're gonna want one after you hear this.

ROGERS

(quizzical)

Not sure I follow.

ROMANOFF

Fury… he's ordered an investigation into the assassinations of three of its Russian resistance leaders. The cover-up's a pretty big deal.

ROGERS

How does it concern me?

ROMANOFF

Given your interesting history I figured you might want to-

ROGERS

(interrupts)

You're working for S.H.I.E.L.D. now?

ROMANOFF

(playful)

I've had a complicated life Rogers. With S.H.I.E.L.D. I…

FLASHBACK of

HOWARD STARK'S finding Rogers encased in ice.

As Rogers wears a heavy look, as if from a blackout.

ROMANOFF

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s been covering a lot of ground since since you've been on ice. They've even got feelers on your old-

We hear something like a

INSERT

BUZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

ANOTHER ANGLE

as we see Romanoff remove

INSERT

sleek black vibrating phone from pocket.

ROMANOFF
Hold on.

She answers. We hear NICK FURY's staticky voice on the other end.

FURY

Natasha. Where are you?

ROMANOFF
Fury you just relieved me. I'm back on?

INSET
We hear more FURY talking.

WIDE SHOT

As we see Rogers shift gaze from Romanoff O.S. at Banner, Stark and media blitz.

ROMANOFF

Nordosibirsk?

FURY

Natasha, report to Aldnsk at sixteen thirty. Agent Stinson will be waiting at the embassy with everything we talked about. Lips are sealed Romanoff.

ROMANOFF
Crystal clear.
(Hangs up)

ROGERS
What did Fury want?

ROMANOFF
What he always wants. His orders.

ROGERS

(subtly fed up)

What he always wants. Orders? Ha. Excuse me for pegging you the type who follows her own.

ROMANOFF

Unlike you?

(pause)

I read your file, Steve. You're no yes man.

(pause)

You want something to do Rogers? You should talk to Fury. We all know S.H.I.E.L.D. can use a guy like you… make a difference. Instead of waiting on the sidelines.

ROGERS

Waiting?

ROMANOFF

You should give him a call.

ROGERS

He's not exactly the kinda guy you can just reach.

ROMANOFF

(hints)

Then get creative.

Rogers' neck straightens, as if unsure what Romanoff's getting at. For a moment he stands there a bit perplexed.

ROMANOFF

(clueing in)

C'mon, Rogers. S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Washington?

WIDE SHOT

Of car as we hear Barton

INSERT

HONK

its horn.

(impatient)

COME ON NAT!

FAVORING

Romanoff and Rogers.

ROMANOFF

Well it's girl's night out so… gotta run.

ROGERS

Take care of yourself.

ROMANOFF

(smiles)

Always do.

FAVORING

Romanoff as she turns on her heel, something like a ballerina.

ANOTHER ANGLE

as we see Romanoff enter car with Barton. The car drives off into the background.

ANOTHER ANGLE
of ROGERS staring off, looking pensively, before slowly turning away to hop on his motorcycle.
