Disclaimer: I don't own the characters.

A/N: The song "The Healing Kind" belongs to Lee Ann Womack. Once again warning this is a depressing short story. I was just in this kind of mood. The next part of "Shattered" will be out soon. Thanks.

The Healing Kind

She watched him walk away and felt her heart break into tiny pieces that just cut her till she bled. She had thought that he had returned for good, that love really did conquer all. But it didn't all it did was hurt.

Starin' out the window at the sinkin' sun

Another painful day is done

If I could convince myself I was over you now

I'd find a way to go on somehow

She tried to be strong for so long. She tried to play it tough and act like she wasn't dying inside. To act like she wasn't disappearing with every breath that she took.

But the pain just grows stronger everyday

I think of you and I'm on my way

Down memory lane with your hand in mine

Guess I'm just not the healing kind

It was funny how the memories that once made her smile in delight now made her cringe in pain. It was as if someone had just existingished that flame that kept her alive. She couldn't even be angry with him anymore. She just felt empty, hollow without his presence.

Another December and the cold wind blows

And the nights without you are so long

I stare at our picture through the firelight's glow

And where you are right now I just don't know

She didn't even dream of him anymore. No more fantasies of him returning and proclaiming his love and his mistake of leaving her. No phone calls or letters. No hope left. Only one thing left to do.

But the pain just grows stronger everyday

I think of you and I'm on my way

Down memory lane with your hand in mine

Guess I'm just not the healing kind

She couldn't heal. She couldn't make anything matter to her anymore. She just didn't have the will to exist anymore. The pain had killed her heart, spirit and soul. She was just a shell of her former self. So she picked up the bottle of sleeping pills and swallowed the entire amount. Shelby Merrick lay down and waited for the dreamless state to overtake her.

"Goodbye Scott." she murmured as now she finally had the last word. He had always left her, now it was her turn to leave him for good.
