\It was another long dragged out lesson in combat training at Beacon Academy. Their lecturer went through tactics and every so often asked one of the students to fight a weak Boar Grimm. During the demonstration the Headmaster walked in and observed the battle taking place between a student and the whimpering boar who had been pummelled so many times that it was bleeding profusely on the floor. The headmaster interrupted, "Excuse me, but I demand the audience of Yang and Ruby." The lecturer replied, "Certainly Professor Ospin." The girls stood up and followed Ospin as they were escorted to his office.
Once the girls arrived at the office, Ospin sat down and offered the girls a bite to eat. "Now girls, I have a rather dangerous assessment for both of you. It will involve you tracking down two specific Grimm who are deemed dangerous and rather vicious."
The girls hesitated for a second, but Yang asked, "Professor If I may ask, why did you pick us?"
Ospin explained, "You two girls are the most promising fighters at Beacon for what I have witnessed. Yang, you excel at all practical matches but you slightly lack in the theory side of your tactics. Ruby on the other hand excels at the theory side but falls short on her matches. I have decided to send both of you on this assignment but before I dismiss you, I have some information for you…The Grimm are considered to be Stage four, the highest stage possible. These two Grimm currently threaten the academy. As you know, Beacon currently sits on a 2734 meter cliff, which is why we use zeppelins to access the academy. These Grimm are planning something that could result in the destruction of the academy."
Ruby spoke up, "I think we're up to it sir. What's your view on this Yang?"
Yang replied with, "No reason to decline. I've been wanting to get out of classes for a little while. We're in Professor."
"Alright. The assignment begins at six tomorrow morning at the launch pads." Ospin finished.
As the clock struck three the next morning, Ruby lay awake in her bed staring at the bottom of the top bunk which Yang was passed out dreaming about something cute. Ruby thought about her relationship with Yang. They weren't sisters from the same mother, they are related through their father who is a huntsman himself and regularly sends them souvenirs and gifts from his travels. The girls have grown up together with Yang being the oldest and caring for Ruby whenever she ran into trouble. Ruby was too paranoid and nervous to sleep, 'What if one of us is injured, disappears or possibly dies…?' She thought she didn't know what she would do if anything happened to Yang. After five minutes of thinking to herself, she fell asleep again and was interrupted by the five o' clock alarm. She battled with Yang to wake her and finally poured water on her face. Yang woke with a startled cry and leapt out of bed and readied her combat stance. After 10 minutes of scavenging for their combat gear and weapons, Ruby emerged from the bathroom ready for a fight while Yang on the other hand walked out casually while combing her bright yellow hair with her beady purple eyes.
The girls met Ospin at the launch pads.
He gave them one final piece of advice, "If one of you is injured, abandon the task immediately. Fend off anything that has attacked you and report back here without fail. I wish not to lose any of my students."
The girls nodded, they stepped up on the launch pads, ready for the inevitable thrust forward over a 2700 meter drop to death. They didn't have parachutes and there wasn't anything to break their fall. They were required to use their own landing method, the girls were thrown forward at the same time and after they exchanged a slight wink they dropped at an incredible speed. In one second Yang's bracelets transformed into gauntlets with shells loaded into a unique firing system implemented inside a folding system, in the other second she fired HE shells from her gauntlets to slow her descent, while Ruby on the other hand aims her scythe towards the Earth and fired 50 caliber heavy slugs from a firearm that was crammed inside the pole arm. The girls landed a few feet below the ground, in a crater which was created by their weapons. After struggling to escape the crater, the girls began their reconnaissance to find the wanted Grimm.
The girls spent two days tracking down the Grimm yet still came up empty-handed. Ruby and Yang sat down for a break to relieve their legs from endless walking.
Yang turned to Ruby, "It's been two days and nothing…Do you have any ideas?"
Ruby replied, "Well, I guess we have to kee-"
Before Ruby could finish her sentence, a massive eagle flew over and they knew exactly what it was. A Grimm. This Grimm had evolved over the centuries from the continuing war mankind had engaged with these beasts. The girls scrambled to catch up to the behemoth of a creature, they could see the Grimm losing them and in a last second action, Ruby assembled her scythe and shot a .50 caliber shell behind, propelling herself into the air breaking the sound barrier. In less than a second, she landed on the Grimm forcing it to spiral out of control towards the ground with Ruby caught up with it. Yang was at the drop zone in her ready stance with her trigger finger itching.
The Grimm hit the earth. Yang spun around to view the tumbling eagle and the scared girl that was her sister. With a blackboard screech the eagle created a dint in the crust which was visible from space with Ruby caught up in it. Yang scanned the crater and found Ruby unconscious with blood running down her battered and bruised face. Yang realised It was up to her to solo the monster until Ruby recovered, but she knew she couldn't do this alone and for very long. Yang and the Grimm were exchanging blows, one to the head and another to the body. Yang coughed up blood when the monster struck her right in the stomach. She returned the favour with a HE shell to the monsters beak. The Grimm screeched in agony. The eagle swiped at Yang and flew close to the ground while propelling its feathers directly at her. The Grimm couldn't sustain flying for a long period of time while attacking Yang and could only remain in the air for two or so minutes at a time. This gave Yang an advantage to overcome the gap between a flying Grimm and a melee fighter. She would use her CQC (Close Quarters Combat) ammo whenever the Grimm was grounded. The ammo had a very large spread which would hit the Grimm in a lot of different places in a single burst. When the Grimm took flight she switched to her HE (High Explosive) shells which had long range and exploded on impact. Yang had the ability to fight up close and personal and from a distance, this weakened the Grimm. At that moment, Yang was confident she could win this.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ruby being lifted by another insanely huge Grimm. She instantly knew that was the other Stage four Grimm, Scorpion. Instead of finishing off the already battle wounded Eagle, she darted for the Scorpion only to miss by a few seconds. The scorpion tossed Ruby's badly wounded body down the blacker than black ravine which seemed to continue to the centre of the earth. Yang saw Ruby's body float in the air for a period of time then her body dropped at an incredible speed into the darkness…
Yang couldn't believe it and she screamed, "NO!" while she sprinted towards the ravine. The scorpion cut her off and knocked her back towards the eagle. Her hair exploded into flames and her eyes switched from an innocent purple to evil red, all while she ran towards the Grimm. In one punch she managed to blast the scorpion back 100 meters. She dove off the cliff into the darkness after her sister while the eagle and scorpion watched as she disappeared, Yang fought back her fear of losing her sister forever, telling herself that Ruby couldn't have died.
Yang propelled herself further into the darkness with one last cry for her sister, "RUBY!"
