It must have been fate that brought them there. They walked together amongst the blades of grass that grew so high and spoke about things inconsequential to their current situation. But they knew they had to return to the pits from which they came, thus leading them back to the mines. The mines they so desperately wished to take leave from.

"I'll see you later, Satoshi!" Daisuke let a smile christen his dirty face. Being a worker in the mines, the guards never let then take a moment to wash, except at bed time. Not even on their day of freedom to the pastures did they get the moment to clean up so the world could see them bright and shiny clean.

Satoshi did not smile. "I'll see you in the bunks, Dai." He muttered, then moved to his station while Daisuke moved off in the other direction to do the same.

Satoshi often thought when he worked. He thought of many things, but mostly of Daisuke. The boy was such a bright bubble, never one to frown and always there to take your hand and lead you to the better place, even if it meant leaving himself behind. What could he have done to get him sent to a prison colony? It wasn't possible that he could have hurt someone, The kid would never hurt a fly! But when he had asked, Daisuke had just laughed and said 'you wouldn't believe me if I told you.'

Meanwhile, across the colony, Daisuke was having similar thoughts as his friend. "Satoshi is a good guy," he muttered to himself. "He doesn't deserve to be here." Satoshi was there for killing three people. But he had sworn that it wasn't his fault. The only reason it didn't stand up in his trial is he had said a man on great black wings had knocked the people off a roof while flying. Daisuke believed him. Nobody else did.

:-P

That night Satoshi and Daisuke climbed into Satoshi's bunk. They meant no harm, just to hold one another while they took turns crying. It was after the sun set that they were able to stop being so brave and cry. If the guards knew they did this, they would certainly be punished. That's why they didn't know.

"Satoshi?" Daisuke asked, barely a whisper.

"Hm?" Satoshi looked at him solemnly, as always.

"I have to tell you something. Please don't hate me?" Daisuke sounded ready to cry.

"Go on." Satoshi said.

"The reason I'm here is i and an arts thief. But I also confessed to a murder, but they didn't believe me." Daisuke said.

"Why would i hate you for that, Dai?" Satoshi asked, confused.

"Because, the murder i confessed to was... pushing three people off a building with my wings." Daisuke could barely be heard.

"Got out of my bed. Stay away from me. How dare you make fun of me? I thought you believed me." Satoshi hissed angrily.

"No, Sato, it's true. It's true! Please, Satoshi..." Daisuke whispered, but seeing the cold face of his one and only friend, Daisuke returned to his own bed.

:-P

The next day there was a jail break. Daisuke looked for Satoshi, but couldn't find him. Everyone was looking for the escapee. Daisuke knew who it was. "No!" He thought. "I have to give Sato a chance to escape! I wont see him killed!" So Daisuke ran for the fence. He was caught. Satoshi, seeing this, quickly escaped. He returned the next day to speak through the fence to his best friend and thank him for the distraction. But he wasn't at his post. or in the meadows. Or anywhere Satoshi could see. And then he saw him. The dead and punished body of a beautiful boy, hanging from the punishment post.

Satoshi cried. "It's my fault," he cried. "My fault."
