'There was a time when men were kind.'
Fantine was half dead; curled up on the cold ground at the bottom of society. 10 franks would save her dear Cosette but is the pain and suffering she's going through really worth it for the Thenardier's poor hospitality for her child? Thrown out of Valjean's business after a worker found a letter about the debts she has to pay to the Thenardiers, she tumbled down to the bottom of existence and was probably never going to be able to trust a man again. What used to be done occasionally for true love's pleasure has now been broken and moulded into a terrifying figurine of an arrogant selfish man. But this was for money and, as Fantine's health was deteriorating, Cosette could have a mere chance of survival.
It was a cold rainy night and her body was frail and skeletal, her bald scalp throbbing and her eyes blood shot- she had seen more than you could ever imagine. She wanted nothing more than a night alone or with someone with a kind heart...all she received was a rough touch. She was not in the 'mood'. She flinched and lept out on the man wanting to buy her body. A huge slice on his cheek bled obviously and, of course, Javert wasn't too far away.
Javert seized her and was all ready to give her a sentence but just round the corner was her saviour, the new face of God. Jean Valjean. Little did Javert know that he was 24601, the previous convict who broke his parole, and he treated him like everyone else did, as the Mayor.
"Javert, please excuse this innocent woman," spoke Valjean.
"This whore has caused a serious injury Mayor!" said Javert.
"She needs a hospital not a jail Javert!"
Jean Valjean approached Fantine with a delicate hand. At first, she was terrified after a roll of horrific experiences but she did feel something. It was an electric feeling that lit up everything. It was over 7 years since she felt this and her weak body could not react in the way she would have done before her life's devestation. Valjean cradled her and got her to a hospital as fast as he could.
Fantine lay in her hospital bed. This was the comfiest feeling she had felt in a long time. She explained to Jean all about her child, Cosette. He was incredibly empathetic and caring and Fantine felt she could trust him with everything and anything...
"Fantine, I will rescue Cosette."
This was music to her ears! This has to be the love of her life...
6 months later...
Jean Valjean sat in his green armchair which was embroidered with gold details. He cradled Cosette in his arms whilst Fantine was finishing sewing the buttons onto his jacket. Cosette had recently had her birthday and was cuddling her beautiful new doll. She slept like an angel with her blonde hair swept across her clean, pale face. Fantine looked over and couldn't help feeling complete and utter devotion towards her family, all thanks to that one dark night which could have been a tragedy. Jean Valjean has rescued her from the deep dark hole of her past and saved Cosette from abuse and neglect, how would she ever repay him. Valjean was a good man, he wanted no revenge on anyone, no gifts from anyone. He loved and didn't hate. He forgave and didn't dwell. He is the new face of God. Fantine soon became Mrs Valjean and the family lived content lives together living every day to the maximum potential and they all loved eachother with every inch of their hearts.
