Hayley Orton lay dying in First Union Medical center. It had been over a year since she was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Her boyfriend, Cameron Hickenbottom sat by her side along with his parents, Shawn and Rebecca, and Hayley's parents Randy and Samantha. There were tears streaming down all four of their faces, but Hayley stayed surprisingly calm..
"Do you need anything, Hales?" Cameron asked her.
'I want you to do something for me." she said.
"Anything." Cameron said with a smile.
She pulled a syringe from under her pillow. "You see this Cameron?" she asked. "If you put this in my IV, it'll stop my heart, and I'll die." she said. "I need you to kill me."
"I can't do that Hayley." Cameron said.
"Do you want me to suffer?" she asked.
"No." he whispered.
"Then do this for me." she begged.
"Hayley sweetheart, think this through." Randy said, holding his daughter's hand.
"Daddy, I'm gonna die, don't you get that?" Hayley said.
"Hales, please don't make me do this." Cameron said.
"Hayley, please think about this." Shawn said.
Rebecca nodded. "You don't have to do this." she said.
"Cameron, if you don't do this, I will." Hayley said. "If you love me, you'll do this for me." she said.
Cameron had to give in. That phrase was the only thing he had never been able to resist.
He pulled the cap off the needle and placed it in the IV tube.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
She nodded. "I love you." she said.
Cameron smiled a small smile. "I love you too." he said.
He pressed the end of the syringe and watched as Hayley's heart monitor went flat.
"I love you." he whispered.
