He hadn't been expecting this when Syed asked him to go with him to Tamwar's engagement party. He had expected Masood and Zainab to be less than receptive towards them, to be outright hostile, even. But he never in a million years expected the roof to come crashing down.
He had been so proud of Syed, finally able to walk with his head held high and show his community that he wasn't ashamed of being gay. He had been proud of Tamwar for standing up to his parents and telling them that he wanted his brother to be there. He could see that Syed appreciated it greatly.
He hadn't been able to enjoy the moment though as dust and plasterboard rained down on all the guests. He immediately thought of Syed. He needed to know his lover was safe and all right after the roof had started collapsing.
"Sy!" He called out, panic rising up inside him when he couldn't see Syed through the dust.
"It's okay, I'm okay," He saw Syed stand up and for a moment he thought everything was going to be okay, no real harm done.
Then he saw the beam.
"MOVE!" He called out to Syed but it was too late. There was no time for his lover to react as the beam came crashing down on top of him. He could hear the screams of the terrified guests but they didn't seem to register with him. All he could see was his injured boyfriend lying lifeless on the floor. Tears filled his eyes as he stared helplessly.
"No…"
