Disclaimer: I do not own Weiss Kreuz or anything related to it, like the Schwarz and the Schrieint. (Though I wished I owned Ran, aka Aya. *sigh*)
Behind the Mask
"Heartless bastard."
He heard Nagi mutter as he left. He'd just refused to let Nagi court Tot even though Schwarz and Schrieint were "partners" for now. He didn't want Nagi's crush to get in the way of Schwarz's plans.
As he stood alone in the forest, he wondered if he really didn't have a heart anymore and decided that Nagi was probably right. But, it hadn't always been that way.
He dug into his pocket and pulled out an amethyst butterfly clip. Dark purple in color...like her eyes. He remembered the day he gave it to her. It was her sixteenth birthday. She'd blushed as he put the clip on her hair and admitted that he wanted to be more than friends. She'd always worn it after that.
He closed his eyes as he remembered her on the day he proposed. Her long jet-black hair cascading freely down to her shoulders. Her sparkling amethyst eyes looking lovingly at him. Her rose pink lips parted in a bright smile. And her soft laughter. Music to his ears.
He'd watched her cheeks flush as he showed her the ring. She'd shook her head and stopped him before he could leave, his hopes crushed. She was still too young, she'd said. Only eighteen. Ask me again in a year's time. He'd agreed, of course. He could never refuse her anything.
Then, it happened. She'd been out late. Knowing he was busy that night, she'd walked home instead of asking him to pick her up. He had his first vision that same night. He'd seen her being attacked in a dark alley. But, he'd pushed it away, thinking it was nothing.
The next day her anxious parents had called to ask if she'd spent the night with him. She hadn't come home the might before. He'd told them that he hadn't seen her the entire day, yesterday. So, they'd called the police and a search for her began. She was found raped and left for dead in a back alley. That was when he'd first realized his "gift" of precognition...and when his heart had began to die.
He'd rushed to the hospital and demanded to see her. She became hysterical when he'd entered and a nurse had made him leave. But, not before he'd seen the look of shame in her eyes. She hadn't want him to see her that way.
That was the last time he'd see her alive.
It rained the day of her funeral. He'd stood at the back, dark shades hiding his puffy, red eyes. When it was over and everyone but her parents had left, he'd gone to the coffin that had already been lowered into the ground. He'd thrown down a single purple iris, her favorite flower. I love you, he'd whispered.
Her father had gone to him and slipped into his hand the butterfly clip. She wanted you to have it, he'd said. Her last words were, Tell Brad I love him.
A month later, the rapist, who'd been caught and then released due to lack of evidence, had been found dead in his apartment, his body mutilated beyond recognition. The case was closed soon after. Ironically, it was due to lack of evidence.
The following day, he'd left for Japan, where he'd been offered a job. But, before he left, he visited her grave for the last time to say goodbye, leaving behind a single iris.
When he opened his eyes again, he was surprised to find his vision blurred by tears. He quickly wiped them away and returned the clip to his pocket. Hearing Shuldrich call for him, he slowly walked back to the mansion, his face a cold and indifferent mask once more.
