Twilight: Edward's POV

Some days like today I wish I was a normal teenage human, not a demon from hell forever damned to drink blood. I wish I didn't have an affinity for hearing people's thoughts, especially today.

There was a new girl in school; it took so little to excite the minds of the people in Forks. From what I had seen in people's minds she had long brown hair and plain brown eyes, just an ordinary girl. I heard the thoughts buzzing around the cafeteria, already half the boys in Forks were imagining being in love with her.

I'd seen this girl in every view point imaginable but held no interest to me until I heard my said aloud, it'd been to long since anyone other than my family had said my name that I instinctively turned around.

"Which one is the boy with the reddish brown hair"(Meyer 22)? I heard Jessica sigh and think, jeez already crushing on the Cullen's, cold day in hell before Edward says yes to someone as plain as you. Then she replied, "That's Edward. He's gorgeous, of course, but don't waste your time. He doesn't date. Apparently none of the girls here are good-looking enough for him"(Meyer 22). I smiled at this remembering Jessica's insane fantasies about me kissing her but also felt something strange--anger, because Jessica was fooling this girl into thinking she was a friend, when her thoughts were so cruel. I saw the girl smile at her comment too and quickly scanned her mind for her name, WHAT THE HELL!! I couldn't read her mind, what was wrong? I read the minds of other students for her name instead--Bella--it fit her.

Now that I'd seen her in person I saw nothing ordinary about this girl. I saw her lush wavy brown hair framing an angelic face. How her eyes were a warm deep chocolate brown that you could just get lost in, and her pale skin--so pale she could pass for a vampire if it wasn't for the rhythmic sound of her beating heart.

Bella looked over at me and I caught her gaze for a second before turning away. I saw her cheeks flood with the sweet warm blood and felt venom rush to my mouth, I swallowed it down quickly, disgusted with myself. I knew from just that one glance I would do anything in my power to keep her safe.
