Cookies
The seven-year-old Yuu Tobita timidly took the farthest seat in one corner of the classroom, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. The boy knew that this was no longer the orphanage where he had come from – alices like his own, of course, were as common as the sunrise in Alice Academy.
Still, he couldn't seem to wrap up his mind around that fact, and the boy found himself uneasily refusing all interactions with his classmates, fearful that his ability – his "alice" – might drive people away from him again.
"Yuu?"
The boy flinched, his eyes widening when he heard the voice behind him. Uneasily he turned his head to look at who it was, flashing a small smile at the girl staring at him. "H-hi, Anna."
Anna Umenomiya smiled, her aura as bright as her pink hair. "I baked some cookies. Would you like some?"
Yuu parted his lips to say no, only to pause when he realized that the girl had used the opportunity to stuff a small cookie inside his mouth. Surprised, the boy had no choice but to chew and swallow.
"Sorry," Anna said sheepishly. "I knew you'd say no, so I had to be quick." She cocked her head to one side, smiling kindly at him. "Did you like it?"
Yuu felt his cheeks burn bright red. "I-I did, yes," he murmured, before lowering his head to look at his shoes in embarrassment.
Anna only giggled, handing him another one. "I hope that also means we're friends now."
Yuu blinked. "F-friends..." he stuttered, shyly accepting the treat before reluctantly smiling back at the other student.
Maybe, just maybe, this girl with the kind look in her eyes was the friend he had been waiting for all along.
"I'd love to be friends with you, Anna."
