Chapter One: Making A Difference
I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I remember standing there watching the Earth burn. It seems so long ago now. If I had known then what I do now, I would have thought of you then. Alone in the universe, that's what I was, that's what you are. At least that's what you'd have had me believe. That's what I did believe. You thought being back home was the only cure for that.
I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
You blame yourself for the death of your planet, for the deaths of those you cannot save. You blame yourself for everything really, pain, loss, the universe; all the things you can't help and could never hope to. Yet, you try so hard, knowing you'll fail but still hoping for success. It's like the time we stopped those gas-mask people, back when we first met Jack. You were so happy then. "Everyone lived!" and I believed it too. It wasn't 'til much later that I realised we had been in the middle of a War.
I will not break the way you did,
You fell so hard
You lost everything. Your home and your people. That's something you can never forget. You didn't lose yourself. That's the one thing you never remember. The one thing you're never thankful for. Back at Van Statten's, when we faced the Dalek, you nearly lost yourself. The one good man who gives his life to improve that of others. The one man of an entire race that the universe saw fit to survive. The one man whose life you're not thankful for.
I've learned the hard way
To never let it get that far
There was always something else, something better. That's what you showed me. Something may be lost, but life and the universe hold so much more. We hold so much more. Despite all the pain and the suffering, despite all the fighting and the dying, despite all that, there is potential for good, for love, for sacrifice. That's what you showed me. That's what you try to show yourself. But, if a shop girl can save the world, then what more proof do you need?
