Chapter 1: A Prison

The prison hung deformed off the edge of the cliff. It was once a cubic block of limestone and steel, equipped with deadly, and dangerous, guards. A prison famed for its impenetrable defenses, and cruel hostility.

Yet now, it was a mass of ruins, destroyed by a single, destructive battle. The only thing that remained was a sole cell, hovering gently near one of the prison's ledges.

The cell was shaped like a box, with a mass of Dementors swarming around as it sat suspended in mid-air. Its single occupant would have to best a dozen Dementors, and then jump fifty feet to a ledge guarded by four heavily armed Aurors. If the occupant was somehow able to accomplish that, they would have to navigate their way through the ruined prison, then dive a hundred feet into the icy waters below the prison, to their utter doom.

Of course, I have no intention of escaping, thought the cell's occupant to himself. He did not want to risk his life trying to escape, and even if he escaped, he would simply be caught and thrown back into the deformed prison. He was beginning to have second thoughts about the note.

The note had come the day before yesterday, in a paper airplane similar to that used by the Ministry of Magic. Since it had no life source, the Dementors could not sense it. It had simply said:

I am neither friend nor enemy, but the enemy of my enemy is my temporary ally. In 48 hours, prepare to leave your prison.

It had been unmarked.

The cell occupant was unsure whether or not the "temporary ally" would arrive, but when he (or she) arrived, he wanted answers.

But until the "ally" arrived, Grindelwald would take a little nap.

Floating outside the prison, Nuremgard, was a shadowy figure in dark robes. He pulled out his wand, Cypress with the core of a snake scale, and waved it. A massive explosion shook the prison, and a hole the size of a giant appeared. The shadowy figure flew silently, without broom or animal, into the prison. Several Aurors apparated instantaneously in front of him, preparing to Stun him, but they were not fast enough.

"Avada Multivadra!" the figure rasped, and the Aurors fell down, dead. The figure stepped over the motionless bodies, and continued down the path to the cell.

As he appeared on the ledge, the Dementors noticed him, but strangely, did not attack him. But, even stranger, when he floated past them to reach the cell, they each gave him a deep bow.

The figure finally approached Grindelwald. The once-Dark wizard looked shocked, confused, and even a little frightened at his appearance.

"I am the one."

A/N: So, this is the prologue! I thought it would be nice to have a little Grindelwald in this chapter, especially since he plays perfect in the rest of the series.

Also, the shadowy figure is pretty powerful. He has the ability to Avada Kedavra a bunch of people at once, plus Dementors respect him.
