A little thing that occurred to me on the ferry a few days months ago. We've seen several starships operated by the USAF, as well as one Russian and one Chinese ship. But what about the Navy? Wouldn't they be a little miffed that the Air Force gets all the cool toys?
No, I probably won't make this a series. I'm much too busy with Emergence, my games, and real life. But I've said that before, so we'll see.
Set during season 9 because why not.
"So, what's going on in the world today?" Colonel Mitchell asked, striding into the briefing room with an apple in hand.
"Well, the USS Poseidon should be launching within the week," Colonel Samantha Carter told him.
"Poseidon," Daniel Jackson mused. "You know, I really don't know if naming ships after the Greek pantheon is a good idea. I mean, we know the
Mitchell took a bite out of his apple and sighed in reply. "Yeah, well, the decision wasn't up to us."
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked. "I mean, you just said it was an American ship."
"It is an American ship," a fifth voice called. Another man, wearing blue camouflage, entered the room. "Captain Richard Irving, USS Poseidon. United States Navy."
"The, uh, Navy is getting this one," Carter admitted.
"We're letting the Navy have a ship?" Mitchell protested.
"If you ask me, we should have had all of them," Captain Irving replied. "The Joint Chiefs, however, have decided to divide the starships. You've got the Prometheus and the Daedalus, we get the Poseidon, the next two they're not sure about."
"Why didn't we know about this?" Mitchell whispered to Carter.
"You did read the briefing, right?"
"I may have missed that small detail," he reluctantly admitted.
"Okay, please tell me you're at least a naval aviator, and not some frigate captain," Mitchell jabbed at the naval officer.
"I am a naval aviator," he replied, smiling mischievously. "But my XO's a sub driver."
"You're kidding."
"No."
Teal'c raised an eyebrow at the odd exchange. "I do not understand this matter of interservice rivalry."
"It's not just a matter of interservice rivalry," Irving informed them, more seriously. "The Navy's footing the bill for the Poseidon. She's slightly different than the other DSC-01s- actually, Poseidon is designated DDG-50 for security reasons, but that's beside the point."
Daniel Jackson looked up and asked. "Just out of curiosity, how is the Navy paying for the ship? I mean, the first ones took a huge chunk out of our black budget."
"Why do you think we're only building seven DDG-1000s?"
"That's the weird stealth ship with all the problems, right?" Mitchell asked.
"Problems," the Captain said with air quotes. "That project is actually going smoother than expected. Still, I heard that they're thinking about cutting it down to three so we can afford another starship."
"Great, another Navy starship."
"Well, I have a starship to attend to," Irving finished, standing up to leave. "I'd throw in a flyboy insult, but from what I gather, you don't even get to do that anymore."
"At least I'm not a goddamn squid," Colonel Mitchell snapped back.
He turned back to his team after the naval captain left. "Did I overdo it?"
Carter shrugged and smiled. "Maybe a little."
