Disclaimer: I don't own Fable or any of the characters, etc.yadayada, whatever.
Here's another Fable oneshot based on the final battle with Jack of Blades(well, at least in the Xbox version of Fable). A warning, this oneshot is a bit schizophrenic so...um yeah. Again, constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. People who flame this story will promptly get the one-finger salute. Read & Review please!
Laid To Rest
"They say death is the proof of life…"
So thought the Hero as he stared into the vortex, its inky blackness akin to the dark, crushing waves of sorrow that raged in him.
Death is a natural part of life; he had learned that lesson the hard way as a child. Still, no matter if death was or was not a part of life, the Hero couldn't accept this. Yes, Jack of Blades was dead…but so was everyone else. The Guild-Master…Whisper…the apprentices…his mother…and Maze, who had saved the hero when he was still a boy. Maze…murdered by the very person he saved. He was a traitor, but nobody deserved to die like that. Nobody. But that didn't matter anymore. They were all dead. Everyone.
Only Theresa and the Hero had survived.
It was the Oakvale Raid happening all over again. Except this time he had saved himself and he had acquired something other than grief and pain: The Sword of Aeons.
That accursed blade! The goddamn thing had been the cause of it all. It was because of it that everyone had died. It was all because of that blade! The thing had to be destroyed. Destroyed!
But yet….the hero couldn't destroy it. The power he felt in his hands as he grasped it, the power! The promise of infinite power! It was far too alluring for him to pass up. Part of the hero wanted to cast the blade into the vortex where nothingness awaited, to cast it back where it belonged, but the other part of him suggested otherwise. Besides, had he not been the one who murdered Whisper just for ten-thousand gold? It was hypocritical for him to lie to himself.
Unlimited power at his fingertips. And all he had to do was kill his sister. He had killed hundreds of people; killing Theresa would be no different. But then those people had deserved it, they were murderers and monsters. The Hero thought in retrospect again. But did Whisper deserve it? Did Maze deserve it? No, of course not. So no, killing Theresa would be different. He couldn't bring himself to do it, no, not even the Sword of Aeons could compel him to commit such a monstrous crime.
Temptation. It was murder. Theresa or the Sword of Aeons?
The Hero cast a glance at the weapon and fell into silence.
The Guild-Master. Maze. The Apprentices. Scarlet Robe. They had all died trying to prevent Jack from gaining the power of the Sword of Aeons. Their deaths would be in vain if he took the blade for himself. It would drive him into madness, the blade.
The Hero took one last look at the Sword of Aeons, and then gaze into the vortex. His mind had been made up.
Though death was the proof lof ife, he could live for them. He could live for the people that died. He could live out their wishes. Live out their wishes for an Albion safe from the death-dealing hands of a tyrant.
The Hero tossed the blade into the vortex, and turned away to exit the Chamber of Fate.
That's what they would've wanted.
This oneshot was done in about ten minutes, so don't blame me if it sucks. Hopefully it doesn't suck. But if it does, be honest and tell me it sucks. And tell me why. If you don't, I'll regard your review as a flame and you'll be given the happy-finger. D. Just kidding.
