It's years in the future, and they meet up again. Perhaps now they can be what they once could not.
Chuck and Blair going to the movies. Chuck and Blair holding hands. In high school it hadn't been possible. It wasn't realistic in college, either, but they were both tired now. Tired of living in reality and holding hands with others while still holding tight the hearts of one another. Holding, twisting, hurting.
He was tired when he knocked on her door that night, rain pouring down behind him. He'd sent his driver on, assuming she'd let him in at the very least. But she hadn't been home and as she'd insisted on living alone this semester, after two years with roomates from hell, he was left waiting on her doorstep without even an umbrella. He considered calling his driver back or seeing if Humphrey would meet him for drinks, but he was tired. Tired enough to sit down on the dirty ground like a common man and wait for her to come home.
Eventually he dozed off, finally waking when she came home and kicked him over with her designer heeled foot. He hadn't been asleep that long; it was still dark outside.
"What are you doing here, Chuck?"
Not quite the welcome he'd been hoping for, but it would do.
"I'm tired." Right, because that's what he'd come all this way to say.
"I gathered that when I saw you sleeping on my doorstep. Why exactly are you tired in New Haven, to be exact?"
He rubbed his tired eyes and moved to stand up. His back was aching from the concrete nap he'd accidentally signed up for. She'd crossed her arms and was tapping her foot, looking at him expectantly. Best not to keep a Waldorf waiting.
"I just came to see Humphrey for the weekend. He had plans tonight and I arrived a little early, so I thought I'd see what you were up to, maybe get you drunk and take advantage."
"Please. You're lying. And you're off your game, I must say. That was a terrible lie. What's the deal, Bass?"
He needed a drink if he was going to do this. "How about you let me inside and I'll explain. It's freezing and I've been out here all night. I could really use a drink, too."
She thought about it, and for a moment it really looked like she was going to send him on his way, but finally she sighed and unlocked the door, leading them both inside.
