I hope that Sue understands and isn't mad at me, Jack worried as he thought over his conversation with Sue a few minutes before. Don't feel badly about it, Hudson. It's for her protection. She'll recognize that at some point. Right? She'll understand. Won't she? He paced back and forth in the hotel room. We just can't tell what Jonathan Hammond will do next. We have no clue about what he is capable of doing to her if he gets desperate for information. I can't believe that while Jessica and I were there eating supper together he was outside talking to her! He could have done anything to her and I wouldn't have been able to help her.

"Jack! Sue!" Lucy said as she knocked on Jack's door.

Why is she asking for Sue in my room? Jack asked. She's in the next room.

"Jack!" Lucy's voice was slightly more urgent.

"Yep," he said as he walked over and opened the door. There stood Lucy, Levi, Myles, Jessica, and all the others.

"Why aren't you two still in Sue's room?" asked Myles suspiciously.

"Because that's her room and this is mine," Jack explained. Why doesn't Myles know that?

"Where is she?" Jessica asked.

"In her room." Obviously.

"She's not there." Lucy's voice was gaining a touch of panic.

WHAT?!

"Sue's gone!"

...

Close inspection proved that Miss Sue Thomas was indeed missing. Jack ran down the stairs to the lobby, desperately hoping against hope that Sue had simply decided to leave against his command. It was a fruitless search. No one had seen a blonde woman, alone or with anyone else, since Sue had entered the hotel with Jack an hour earlier.

As Jack sprang into action calling law enforcement agencies and backup he cold not ignore the feeling of utter helplessness.

I failed her. Just a few hours ago she was approached by Jonathan within a few yards of me and I could not help her. Now she was just on the other side of a wall, just the other side of a door and I still could not help her when she needed me most. She's lost and I have no idea where or how to find her. All I can hope is that we find her before it is too late.

...

The phone line was cut off.

She hung up. Now all I know is that she really is with that man and we have no clue where he is. That's not much of a comfort. She doesn't even have Levi with her. She has no one there to protect her and I can't find her to protect her. I failed her and now I am helpless to help her. And helpless to help myself stop feeling so helpless.

"I'm going back to the office," Jack mumbled.

No one had better try to stop me unless they want to be flattened.

No one did.

They were all helpless in the face of this disaster.
