Never Out of Mind

AN: Title is taken from and the fic is inspired by Joseph McManners's song Music of the Angels.

Several moments have passed yet Dean is still amazed. He still can't help but look up at the high ceilings and grand chandeliers hanging from above, and gaze around the huge hall before his eyes finally end up at the rows and rows of new graduates sitting facing the invitees that are mostly parents, dads and moms. Sam is among those graduates; Dean can't stop feeling proud, his chest swelling with pride, smile never deserting his lips. Dean cannot see Sam from where he is sitting, though, but he knows Sam knows he is here. Dean has promised to come to his little brother's graduation day.

A boy singer is standing on stage now. Dean frowns. Aren't they going to proceed to handing out the diplomas? What is the boy doing there?

Ah, singing. He's going to sing. Dean sits back and tries to relax and be patient. There's only one reason why he comes today, and that's for him to see Sam stand in his toga getting his diploma, something he's always dreamed of.

From afar Dean sees the boy takes a deep breath and starts to sing. He has not expected the heavenly voice that resonates next.

Stand for a world
Where you and I can breathe.
Where we walk with the spirit
And we hear
Music of the angels.

Love.
The word is love,
Remember love;
The gift of love – the truth
Is always
Just out of reach,
Never out of mind.

Shine for me,
And make the magic real.
If we feel it together,
It will be
Music of the angels.

Pray for us all.
A prayer can save the world.
If we say it together
It can be
Music of the angels.

The gift of love – the truth is always just out of reach, never out of mind.

Dean's stare turns vacant as his mind wanders to the memory of his mom and dad, both out of reach, but never, ever, out of his mind. Dean wipes his eyes slowly.

"Samuel Winchester."

Dean straightens in his seat as Sam rises and climbs up the platform. The Dean hands Sam his diploma, switches the tassel to the left, and shakes Sam's hand. Sam smiles as he turns to the audience, and Dean feels like leaping from his chair. It's impossible to do that so he sits still, only smiling so widely he thinks his face is going to split in two. But Dean is glad Sam catches his sight. The boy beams in infinite joy at him, before the grin slowly fades and turns to frown.

Dean's heart sinks. "Sam?" he mutters incomprehensively.

If only Dean knew the reason why Sam has looked lost for a second. John and Mary Winchester were there sitting on both Dean's sides when Sam took a glance at his big brother.
