The day I told my parents and my brother, Connor, that I was joining the Army was the worst day of my life. My mom gasped, my dad stuttered, and my brother looked at me like I was insane...

"I'm joining the Army." I say and my dad looks at me.

"Why?" He asks after a minute and I look at him like he's insane.

"Why? Because you always tell me to follow what I believe in. And, we always talk about our boys not having enough people over there to help them." I say and he coughs.

"Those talks are meant for your brother. Not you." He says and Connor glares at him.

"Hey! I'm not dumb enough to get my-self killed. Besides, we're talking about 'Dweeb' over there. Not me." He says and crosses his arms. Mom looks at me and I force a smile.

"It's not all that bad, Mom. Really." I say and she shakes her head.

"What happened to the person who wanted to be a teacher? What happened to my little girl?" She asks and I fight back tears before answering her.

"She grew up." I say and walk out.
