"Please Gerry, they aren't in town for long and you promised that I could pick what we did this weekend." Sandra begged.
"Well when I promised that I didn't know that an ice rink was being put up in the town centre for a week."
"A promise is a promise Gerry."
"Can't we go to that restaurant you liked the look of and then go watch that film at the cinema that you liked the trailer for?"
"It's not out yet and we can do that afterwards now off we go, I'll drive."
"Sandra none of these skates fit, surely that's a sign!" Gerry said trying on his third pair of skates.
"It's a sign that you need to try another size. Why are you so opposed to ice skating?"
"I'm just going to embarrass myself and you."
"You've never seemed bothered about embarrassing me before and anyway I love you me regardless of whether you can ice skate or not Anyway if it makes you feel safer you can hold my hand."
"You blooming better, anyway are you actually any good at ice skating?"
"I wanted to be a professional skater when I was little, I went every Thursday night. I've not been since I was 15 though, school got in the way then uni, then work, you know how it is."
"Yeah, well I'm trusting you not to allow me to fall over."
"Have I let you down yet?" Sandra asked playfully as she kissed him before pulling him out onto the ice.
"It's easy really baby, it's like walking but with a little more exaggeration." She told him as Gerry tried to skate a little. "That's it, just a little more gliding. Here take my hand and follow me." Gerry took her hand and she began guiding him around the rink.
"Sandra! Watch out!" Had Sandra been watching where she was going and not focusing on teaching Gerry how to skate then she may have seen that they were getting closer to the barrier, she may also have been able to stop herself smashing into it. But she hadn't, she lay as cold out as the ice itself as a crowd developed around her with Gerry on the floor by her side.
"Call an ambulance." Someone in the crowd shouted as the first thin trickle of blood became heavier, staining the ice red.
"Oh Sandra, what are you like." Gerry muttered as he pressed his jacket firmly onto the gash in her leg where her skate had cut into it. She was still out cold when the ambulance arrived and was only just coming round as she was wheeled into A&E.
"Gerry?" She whispered.
"Yes honey."
"What happened? Where am I?"
"You're in hospital sweetie, you skated into the barrier while ice skating and knocked yourself out as well as slicing your leg with your skate."
"I can't feel any pain." Sandra reasoned.
"That's because you're dosed up on pain killers just now because it's a nasty cut you sustained and there's a lot of bruising to your forehead."
"Sorry for ruining our day out together."
"Sandra it's not your fault but maybe next time you'll listen to me." She nodded but in all honesty he knew she wouldn't.
