This is not really a fanfic. This is more of a little rant, well not really but I can't think of any other word, about why I think the story of Viserys Targaryen is one of heartbreak and sorrow. I feel a lot of people hate him and view him as evil. In my opinion Viserys is not evil but misunderstood. Yes, I know he treated Daenarys horribly and abused her a lot but I don't think he should be held accountable for his actions. He was a boy who went through a lot of trauma at a very young age, had so many responsibilities on his shoulders and there was no one there he could talk to. No one to help him through the trauma. And sure, while there was Daenarys, she was too young at the time and had not undergone the same trauma that Viserys had since she was only born at the end of Robert's Rebellion.

Think about it, you are a six year old boy who suddenly has his entire life turned upside down. Your parents are killed. Your older brother is killed and your niece and nephew are killed. Well his nephew wasn't killed but that is beside the point. He lost everything due to Robert's Rebellion and was forced to spend the rest of his life, living in fear due to his family name. He didn't know why the Rebellion happened. He didn't know of his father's madness or how he abused his mother. He was too young at the time and his mother sheltered him from all this. If he had been say, 10 years older during the rebellion and knew of his father's madness and his abuse of Viserys's mother then the story would have been a lot different. He hadn't seen all that stuff so he would have believed it as lies created by usurpers to overthrow the Targaryen dynasty. So suddenly your older brother is killed in combat. You flee to Dragonstone with your heavily pregnant mother and then later hear of your father's death and the death of your niece and nephew(who isn't actually dead) and then fear for your life as the same person who killed your entire family is coming to kill you and your pregnant mother. Then your mother dies in childbirth and you are forced to flee away from the only home you have ever known because of your family name. And while the next few years of his life were relatively peaceful, that all changed after Ser William Barry's death when the servants of the man who had looked after them for the last few years threw them onto the streets. To survive, Viserys's was forced to sell all his precious belongings and in the end he also had to sell his mother's crown. The only possession of his which had belonged to his mother. And after that he had to deal with people calling him the Beggar King behind his back. How would you feel if you had to sell last item in your possession which belonged to your dead mother, all just to survive? How would you feel if you had to sell the last thing which reminded you of the person you loved more than anyone else and all just so you could buy some food?

Trauma can affect many people in different ways and if you have no one to help you through it who understands what you are going through then you may very well end up as Viserys had. Gone mad due to the trauma you experienced at a very young age.
