I'll be there

Dean Winchester stood in the door way, of the small room, that he shared with his brother. Sam was currently lying face down on the puke colored blanket on the bed. The soft cries coming from his brother's mouth was eating at Dean's heart. He never had been able to just stand and listen to Sam cry, without at least trying to figure out what was wrong. This time however, Dean knew what was wrong, he just wasn't sure how to help. Sam's first and as far as Dean knew, his only friend at their latest school, had been found dead. It looked like an overdose. Dean seriously doubted it, what kind of twelve year old was hooked on drugs already unless Sam had been a bad judge of character and the kid had been addicted.

Walking into the room, Dean sat down on the edge of the bed. Placing his hand on Sam's back, he began rubbing gentle circles.

"Why did it have to be Adam?" Sam asked, hiccupping softly, as he tried to stop the tears. "Why did it have to be my only friend?"

"I can't tell you why" Dean said softly "things happen and they don't make sense, Adam's death was one of those things." Sam lay still for a moment.

"Maybe its cause I'm bad luck" Sam muttered "bad things always happen when I'm around." Hearing the words come from his brother's mouth, bit into Dean's heart even more, making him hurt as if he could feel Sam's pain as his own.

"I can promise you this" Dean said firmly "It doesn't have anything to do with you, you're not bad luck, and you never will be. After all you're what keeps me going when the going gets tough." He continued his motions on Sam's back. He wished Sam didn't have to go through this situation. He knew though Sam would get stronger for having gone through it.

"How?" Sam asked "it's not like I do very much."

"You're already taking care of research, and besides you give me something to protect." Dean said. Sam heaved out a breath. Dean was right of course, he done plenty to help with hunting. If only Sam had known what had been going on with Adam, maybe he could have done something to help him and he would still be here.

"I should have been able to help Adam" Sam mumbled burying his face in his pillow so his voice came out muffled.

"You didn't know what he was going through" Dean said "it's not like Adam asked for help." Dean still wasn't sure somebody hadn't forced the drugs into the kid's body, forcing an overdose.

"I should have" Sam mumbled.

"You can't know everything" Dean said gently squeezing Sam's shoulder. "You're not a mind reader, besides how do you know Adam's not in a better place now." Dean could be more observant that Sam at times, and many a time had Dean seen the bruises that littered the kid's arms and legs. It didn't take a genius to know what was going on. He had asked Sam about it one day and Sam had said Adam claimed he was clumsy and had gotten them from running into things.

Sam sighed again and rolled over onto his back and looked into Dean's eyes. Dean hated the pain he saw clearly in Sam's. he never wanted Sam to have to experience something like this but unfortunately death was a part of life's experience.

"You won't ever leave me will you?" Sam asked and Dean swallowed hard.

"Not in your life" Dean agreed "I'll always be here to help you get through things like this."

"I love you" Sam said sitting up and launching himself into Dean's arms.

"Not another chick flick moment" Dean groaned softly but he was only teasing, he loved his little brother just as much.

Dean's 16 Sam is 12
