She pushed back the sleeve of her long, sleek black overcoat and stared at her thin caramel leather watch her mother gave to her last week at dinner. She was late, this rarely ever happened anymore but last night she was staying up to review her latest client's case file, making sure she knew all the ins and outs. She finally got to bed around five in the morning but didn't wake up again until eight fifty-three, seven minutes until she had to be at the office.
She stepped into the elevator and furiously pressed the button for the 12th floor before anxiously tapping her left booted foot to the white tiled floor. The doors were finally about to shut.
"Wait, hold the door!" A man came running down the hall, his dark grey messenger bag bumping against his hip as he bounced towards her.
Kate gritted her teeth and reluctantly stuck her gloved hand out to keep the doors from shutting. The man slid in beside her.
"Thank you." He smiled at her, before leaning forward to press the 15th button. That smile, Kate has seen that smile before. She scrunched her eyebrows together and brought her thumbnail to her mouth, biting in thought as she glanced at the silent man beside her every so often.
"Richard Castle" She blurt out suddenly, snapping her fingers and pointing at the man in question. She then realized what she just did in front of her mom's favorite author, her cheeks flooded with a light shade of pink as she turned away from him, facing one wall of the elevator.
"Excuse me?" She could hear the smirk in his voice even with her eyes set on the wall opposite him.
"Oh, nothing. Just, my mom talks about you all the time, you're her favorite author." She glanced at him over her shoulder to find her suspicions were correct, a wide grin was spreading over his stubbled cheeks.
"Your mother has excellent taste in literature."
Kate scoffed and crossed her arms, finally turning around to face him again. "Didn't expect you to be so cocky."
"Pleasant surprise?"
"We'll see." She smiled, slightly flirtatiously before glancing up to see the elevator has already reached the 11th floor. "Well, I'll be on my-" Kate started before the cab came to a halting stop, knocking Kate into the arms of the best selling mystery writer.
"Sorry..." She mumbled, unwrapping herself from his surprised embrace.
"No problem." He ran a hand through his hair and started to look around the elevator, trying to figure out what had happened.
"It's stuck." Kate said, leaning against the wall. "Happens all the time." She glanced down at her watch again and sighed, looks like she wasn't going to be at work for at least another twenty minutes.
"Work here?" He asked, taking his hands off the door and turning back to look at her.
"Yeah, lawyer, five years." She untucked one hand from where it was settled in the crook of her elbow and held up five fingers.
"Impressive..." He trailed off, softly nodding his head.
"I would ask what it is you do but my mother has already made it painfully clear."
He smirked and tucked his hands into the front pockets of his dark wash jeans. "When we get out of here, remind me to sign something for her."
She opened her mouth to reply but was cut off at the same time the lights were.
"Does that happen all the time too?" Rick asked, she could hear the nervousness seeping into his voice.
"Uh, no, not usually." Kate answered, pulling away from the wall before sticking out both hands to find her way to the intercom.
"Bill?" She spoke after she pressed the 'talk' button.
"Already on it, Kate." came the reply. "Might be awhile though, so hang tight." She took her finger off the button and sighed.
"So, Kate?"
"Huh?"
"He said your name was Kate. I think I've heard of you before. 'Kate Beckett brings justice to all.'" He recites the headline of the New York Times from a few weeks ago before smiling into the darkness.
Kate blushes, suddenly glad it's too dark in here to see her clearly. "Well..." she trails off before shrugging modestly and running a hand through her hair.
Rick exhaled. "Well, if we're gonna be stuck here for a while, might as well get comfortable."
Before she could ask what he meant by that, Kate could make out the faint outline of the mystery author slipping his messenger bag over his head before pulling off his jacket.
Only looking at the picture on the back of his books, Kate never realized how big his arms were, which became even more prominent when he rolled up the sleeves of his royal blue button down shirt. The sight of his muscular forearms made Kate drift off for a second into a world of passion and sweat, and he was pinning her up against the door with those beautiful arms of his. She was suddenly ripped out of her fantasy by the author calling her name.
"What? Huh?" She answered, swallowing in an attempt to moisten her dry throat.
He chuckled slightly. "You can take off something as well, it's already started getting hotter in here and that coat doesn't look to comfortable for this situation.
She nodded absently before straightening her arms behind her, allowing her coat to slide down her shoulders. She quickly folded the jacket and dropped it to the floor beside her, before pulling her crisp white button down out of her black, no nonsense work pants.
Castle's head slowly tilted to the side as he watched this woman's hands tug on her shirt. She didn't stop there though, next came her four inch heel boots and the first two buttons of her blouse. Castle swallowed and ran a hand through his already messy hair, trying to calm himself.
He sighed and sat down on the floor of the elevator, taking off his shoes as well and tossing them to the side. Kate sat down after him, crossing her right leg over her left, indian style.
"So, Mr. Castle-"
"Mr. Castle?" He cut her off with a smirk
"Rick?" She scoffed and leaned back against the wall with her arms crossed.
"Better." He smiled before mirroring her position.
"So, Rick." She started, smiling as she put emphasis on his name. "Tell me about yourself."
He clapped his hands together softly before leaning forward.
"Well, I am an author, as you already know." Kate nodded once.
"I also have a daughter, Alexis, she's thirteen." The pride on his face shone through so clearly that Kate couldn't help but smile as well. "My mother...is a bit eccentric, I guess you could say, she just got remarried to some guy named Don but she's over so often it's almost like she lives with us." He shuddered visibly at the thought.
Kate chuckled lightly.
"Let's see, what else?" I'm thirty-seven, rich, and a gigantic man-child." Kate laughed again, harder this time as she leaned closer towards him.
"Now you go." He smiled and gestured to her.
"Well, I'm twenty-eight, actually, my birthday was just yesterday-"
"Happy belated birthday." He interrupted.
She smiled. "Thanks. Anyway, my parents are both lawyers, I wanted to follow in their footsteps I guess. Uh, let's see...no kids, no siblings, I'm pretty ordinary I suppose." She shrugged.
Castle reached out and put a hand on her leg. "You are far from ordinary, Katherine Beckett.
A smiled was slowly stretching across her face as she ducked her head, hiding from his intense gaze. Suddenly, the elevator shook slightly and Kate stood up to check out the problem which resulted in Castle's hand falling back to his own lap.
"That was weird..." She said, slowly letting go of the silver railing attached to the wall when it seemed safe enough. It wasn't though. The elevator shook again, harder this time. Kate stumbled once more and fell to the floor with a loud crash.
"Ow!" She yelped when she landed.
"Oh shit, here." Rick sat up on his knees and pulled Kate back up by her elbows.
"You okay?" He asked, softly, hand hovering by her face before finding her hair and pushing a loose strand behind her ear.
"Uh, yeah, I'm find-fine! I'm fine..." She ducked her head slightly, cheeks coloring a rosy red.
"You sure?" His voice lowered before placing a hand on her chin and lifting her head.
Kate nodded slightly, glancing down at the dark outline of his lips. Castle returned her nod before leaning towards the woman he met in the elevator less than an hour ago. Their lips barely touched when the lights flicked back on and the elevator began to move upwards again.
They both jerked back from the other and turned away, running their hands through their own hair nervously.
"Well, it's fixed." Castle stated awkwardly, finally turning back around to look at her. She turned around too, faltering slightly when she took a look at his forearms in the light of the elevator.
"Y-yeah... I guess it is." She glanced up at the glowing lights at the top of wall, noticing it finally reached the floor of her office. There was a sharp ding before the two silver doors slid open.
"Well, that's me." Kate knelt down to grab her jacket before straightening back up and slipping into her boots. Kate walked up to the door before slowly turning around, raising a hand to wave at him.
"I guess I'll see you around then."
"Kate, wait." Castled stepped forward. "Can I- Can I get your number, maybe?"
Kate smiled and pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. "You got a pen?"
Castle returned her smile before nodding vigorously, reaching back to grab his messenger bag. He pulled out a sharpie and a worn out black notebook. Kate took both items from him and quickly scribbled her number down on the inside cover of the book before handing it back to Castle.
"Call me, you still owe my mom a signed book." She leaned forward, placed a hand on his bicep and kissed his cheek lightly before pulling away with a soft smile on her face.
With that, she walked out of the elevator and down the hall, looking back once to see a smile dominating his entire face.
He called her later that night.
