BEYOND THE 'BERG

The crush of a watery corridor
Pounding against locked doors
Seeking to penetrate,
Infiltrate,
Fill every corner, and
The lungs of every passenger

The inhumanity and injustice
Society masks washed off by panic
Confused and numb
Pushing
Others behind to get ahead, no less cruel
But more base than before

The raw noise, screams and groans
That blend to a roar with the ship
Bending then breaking
Snap
A cable, a pulley, half the main deck
Everything still sinking

The tug of the heartstrings
Fathers, brothers, spouses left aboard
Then lost to the waves
Aching
Why can't we save them? Why can't we help?
They'll kill us all

The final spectacle
Tail straight up like a duck diving
Sliding slowly,
Agonisingly,
Into the ocean, eager to swallow it all
And keep its secrets forever
