She had been the reason for his war. She was his only light in the world of darkness in which they lived, the only innocence left to defend in his strained existence.
And Charles Gunn fought, sacrificed, bled to protect his only baby sister. But in the end it wasn't enough, is it ever?
-
"Don't you want to stop falling?" her voice asks him, taunting him as he commits his final betrayal – not to Alonna or his gang – but to himself: he's rutting with a vampire. They're atop the old building, the only place Gunn's ever fled to, the place where Angel had followed him after staking his baby sister.
Angel had never looked down at him, never asked him to talk about the light that he had snuffed out when he ordered everyone out of the dank cellar, and never asked him for something he knew he wouldn't be willing to give.
-
However at some point, Gunn isn't sure when or where, the pull he had felt for the two-and-a-half century old vampire had become too unbearable. And the worst part was that he could flawlessly hide it from everyone – except the one that it mattered: Angel.
"It's not love," he says defensively, keeping his eyes on the bright colors of the city before him.
"I know," Angel replies as his hand reaches up and slides along Gunn's jaw. "It doesn't have to be."
Charles Gunn faces the vampire and for the first time in his twenty-odd years on this earth, hands himself over so completely to something other than Hunting.
