Epilogue to "Knight of Shadows" - SeaQuest DSV

Lucas Wolenczak lay in his bed feeling too keyed up to sleep. So much had happened that day and the events kept replaying themselves in his mind. They had found the haunted remains of the King George. Lucas had thought it was cool that the Captain wanted him along, even though the reason was based solely on his youth. He thought it was too cool to be true, that is, until he got his first real encounter with the forces on board the liner and the effects those forces had on his friends. Then, he almost wished that he'd stayed on the SeaQuest.

First, he had never known Crocker to be afraid of a single thing. Thus, it shocked Lucas when the Chief suddenly turned superstitious and paranoid. The older man had been extremely quiet ever since they had left the King George and Lucas was worried about him. He reasoned that Crocker would come around when he was ready.

Then he remembered how Dr. Westphalen acted on the liner and how she would look at him and the rest of the crew as though she didn't know them. She didn't even appear to know who she really was. She only knew what Lillian's spirit had "told" her. Dr. Westphalen had no memory of it later, but that didn't stop her from being critical. "Preposterous!" she declared. "It was only the effects of nitrogen narcosis and from what you all are telling me you must have been suffering from those effects as well." She had refused to hear any more on the matter and Lucas suspected she only ordered complete bed rest for all of them to get them off her back.

Was that true? Were these apparitions hallucinations caused by the archaic air on the ship? For reasons that he couldn't readily explain, Lucas didn't think so. What about the fact that the captain's ghost had led them to Lillian's body? Lucas knew that he hadn't imagined talking with the spirit. He would stake his life on that claim.

Finally, there was Captain Bridger. As though it weren't shocking enough that Bridger had believed in the existence of these ghosts in the first place, then there was his strange behavior once the ordeal had ended. The normally outspoken man had barely uttered a word and had practically bolted away from the group when Kristen ordered them all to their beds. That wasn't like him at all Lucas thought to himself. He thought the captain would have been happy to solve this mystery, but he seemed almost sad. "Maybe the lost love thing hit a little close to home." Lucas realized.

Lucas turned over onto his side and squinched his eyes shut hoping to force sleep. It was late now. He only had a few more hours until he had to be on the bridge. Still, sleep wouldn't come. He sighed and resigned himself to the inevitable insomnia. He got up, took a seat at his desk, and turned on his computer. He found his friend Wolfman and started to relay the whole story to him. After that, he felt better and now he felt tired. He decided that sleep might not be so impossible after all and shut off the computer. As he climbed back into his bed, he noticed a shadowy figure standing by his door. In a few moments, the figure grew more defined and Lucas recognized him as the captain of the King George. The specter smiled at Lucas and disappeared. Lucas smiled and closed his eyes.

"Too cool." He thought as he drifted off to sleep.
