Rose-Colored Windows
It's like he's looking through fucking rose-colored windows. How could he be so oblivious? The only thing Dutchy hasn't done is streak through the distribution office with a big "I HEART SPECS" sign on his back. And who knows, maybe that's next on the agenda. This is Dutchy, after all.
I know I shouldn't get so angry, but it's driving me insane. It's so obvious to everyone but the person he wants it to be obvious to. He just dances through life merrily, humming tunelessly and wondering what tomorrow's headline will be. Meanwhile, the one person who really could treat Dutchy right and give him what he needs is forced to stand back and hold him while he cries.
I love him. I really do. I love his smile, his laugh, his blue eyes that crinkle up at the corners when he's happy, his sweet and goofy personality, and . . . I mean . . . him. But he's been blinded by a coy smile and a pair of coffee-colored eyes.
Wake up, Dutchy! He doesn't love you. He never has, and he never will. As hard as I find it to believe, it's the cold truth. All you are to him is his sympathetic ear and late-night gossip partner. He'll never take you to his bed and he'll never say those words you're dying to hear. Snap out of it! It's killing you, and it's killing me to see you waste away.
And you, Specs—knock it off. Take Dutchy's heart off that goddamn leash you have it on. If you really are his best friend, then you'll let him go. Stop toying with him. Be a man for once and give him up.
Dutchy . . .
I love you. I'll take care of you. I'll make you smile. Or, more importantly, I won't make you cry.
Stop looking through Specs' rose-colored windows, and look at me.

Yet another story in the "amatus detestari" series. *sigh* Poor newsies. Anyway, the title comes from "Rose-Colored Stained Glass Windows" by Jars of Clay. Here's the bit that inspired the fic:
Looking through rose-colored windows
Never allow the world to come in
Feel no pain, seeing no evil
Making the light as it comes from within
So dim . . .
It's really a gorgeous song.
