"Hey Max. Thought I'd find you here," Alec said, his tone much softer than usual.
From her seat at the edge of the Space Needle, and without tearing her gaze from the Seattle skyline Max replied, "I come here to be alone."
"Yeah, I know, but considering everything that went down today I figure we could both use a friend right now," Alec said. For once he was actually being sincere. He'd gotten Max to open up to him, and he didn't was to let her turn back around and slam the door in his face. Alec knew the pain of losing someone he loved, and he also remembered how lonely he'd felt. Alec didn't want Max to feel alone.
"Sit down."
At least she wasn't openly kicking him out. Yet. After a moment of collecting his thoughts and deciding what to say next Alec continued, "So you got any deep thoughts you wanna share? Any ah... Profound realizations about life."
"Yeah, love sucks," Max said.
He voice was subdued, not at all what Alec was used to. Although he was thoroughly familiar with her words, and their meaning, Alec was left speechless. He'd come here, hoping to make Max feel less alone, but he now realized that he didn't know how to do it.
"Mia was wrong. She said that love wasn't worth it if there weren't any challenges. She never thought that there were some things that can't be overcome."
"Max," Alec started. He opened his mouth to go on, only to realize that he had nothing to follow that.
"What Alec?" Max said, her tone biting and harsh, more or what Alec was used to hearing. "What is it? Are you going to impart some perfect advice on me about how I was made in a lab and I was never meant to be with Logan? That this virus thing is just a reminder of what I should have already figured out on my own? Go ahead. Tell me everything. Tell me how this makes sense. Tell me why the hell Manticore had to bring me into this world. Cause all I seem to see is pain and suffering," as she said the last sentence Max lost control of her emotions entirely. First tears spilled over her eyelids, drawing twin lines down her face. Shortly thereafter her shoulders began to bob up and down and the rest of her body shook as silent sobs took over her slender fame.
Moving slowly Alec gently placed his arms around Max, "We both know that I can't do that, Max. But you know that all of this is better than Manticore. You had to believe that to let me and everyone else. And you did the right thing. Forget Logan. You've still got friends. People who care about you. People who love you. Original Cindy, Joshua, Sketchy... Me."
Taking Alec by surprise Max slipped deeper into his embrace, settling her head on his shoulder as she let go, allowing her sobs to come out. Regaining his composure Alec did his best to comfort her, "Shh... It's ok Max, I'll still here for you. I always will be."
Slowly Max's crying slowed and her face dried, but she didn't want to move. She wanted to stay right where she was, in Alec's arms. For once she felt safe. Truly safe. As if now nothing could happen to her every again. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For being here for me. Following me up here, even though I thought I needed to be alone. Thank you."
"You're welcome Max. You know that."
